Defense Was That Taylor's Double Did Killing. After a spectcular man extending from coast to coast, a final surrender in southern California to a railway brakeman, a trial and conviction in a Nebraska court, Bert Taylor, who once lived in Allen county and whose father is at present an inmate of the Allen county poor farm, is to expatiate the crime of murder on the gallows in Minden, Nebraska, on Fridays-September 17th. The following dispatch is from Minden, Nebraska: "Bert Taylor was tonight found guilty of murder in the first degree and District. Judge Rungan sentenced him to be hanged on Friday, September 17th. The jury, which had been out since Wednesday afternoon reached a conclusion late this evening after a long argument.

"'Taylor killed Pearl Taylor, sister of his dead wife, whom he had induced, with another sister, to visit his home, lie fled and was pursued for weeks finally eluding capture only to betray himself later whjle in southern California. "The feeling against Taylor was so strong at the time of his return from California that for the sake of safety he was taken to the penitentiary at Lincoln." The Iola Register says: "While a resident of Iola Bert Taylor had. worked for James Mills and C. C. Luccock.

He drove a team fm Mr. Luccock. Some time in 1906 Taylor quit his position here and went back to Nebraska where he had formerly lived. There he committed the crime for which he has just been convicted. Two days after the crime was committed in 1908, Taylor returned to Iola.

He sought Mr. Luccock an? asked for a job. He was told that the contractor was full handed. The next morning circulars announcing the crime were received in Iola and officers began a search for Taylor but without success. He eluded the offic ers throughout the country until last spring- when he surrendered on a Southern Pacific passenger train to the brakeman.

"I'm tired of being hunted like a hound," he- declared. Taylor's defense was that not he but his double had committed the murder. I have an enemy who Iookt just like me," he would claim. 'Hi-did this job. and blames me for "It is said that, even while a fugitive, Taylor wrote to the.

sheriff at Minden, claiming that he hao met his double and had had a terrible fight with him in an attempt to bring h'm to justice. Taylor wrots that the 'double' had threatened to kill him if he, Taylor' didn't take tht blame for the killing. It was a sor. of a Nick Carter tale which was giv en little or no credence. "George Taylor, the condemnct man's father, who is at the county farm, knows that his son is in trouble, but does not know the terrible fate which awaits him.

Taylor never gets any letters Matron Percy said over the telephone this morning, 'but he had heard that Bert was in "The aged parent was not told of the arrest of Taylor and the local officers verdict of the Nebraska jury and the sentence fearing that the shock mighi prostrate him. "A large reward was offered for the arrest of Taylor and the local officcri were on the lookout for the fugitivt but he never showed up in this lo cality after the crime bevame known "Taylor was a good worker, C. Luccock said this morning, 'but he was a bad man. If I recall accurately, when he left Iola he was working for the Santa Fe and boardUu at the home of a Hutchinson. He-gave them an order on his time in payment for his board and then has tened to the paymaster's office and secured the money before the landlord had time to appear with his order." The old ordinances those enacted before 1894, are in book form, and all other ordinances are written out and. indexed in five books at the clerk's office.

The system the clerk has of keeping them is a faultless one but the council should have a new book published, revising the ordinances and iPublshing all the newer ones.
