For Keller and the girls who went, that first trip to Columbus was both exciting and difficult In 1975 when the track team arrived at Ohio Stadium for the meet they were late and went to the wrong gate. After walking completely around the horseshoe, they discovered that the gate they wCre to enter was only one gate away from where they had started.

Two girls, Kathy (Homak) now Kellers assistant coach, and Penny Miller were scheduled to run in the first events and it was second call already. The girls were warming-up outside the staduim while Keller was filling out the forms, but they all made their events on time and the team finished third. Hie girls that went to the state that first year set the standards and the goals for the other girls that followed, she said. The state meets fit general have all been very ex citing for me, and the kids are the reason they have been exciting. She said her husband Rick, who is cross-county coach at Colonel Crawford, has helped her a great deal and he assisted her the first year when she bad 77 girls.

My coaching has all been physical. The mental preparation is something I wanted the giris to build up for themselves. My responsiblity was to get them physically ready, she said. Keller said she felt that part of the reason for the success in girls trade at Wynford is of Title Nine, a federal law which forces schools to provide equal oppor-tunies for both male and female athletes. It still hasnt totally taken effect People dont realize what it meant for the girls and the opportunities it gave them (athletically).

I have only had one girl (Lisa Schimpf) hoe that has had pure talent, the rest of the girls have had to work for everything they have gotten, Tried la District Sovanlh in State W77-AA Marynvfflt Champs Wjndsrd latitetMaal Biinri sp Galloa InTitatiopal Bucyrus May Champa NCC Char W70-4A Marysvtils Wyidord lnaltatioaal 1 Foard Gabos Invitational Buryraa Relay Rsnoaru-v NCC Champs M7WA Bacyna Relays Wynford Iimtetia NCC Char MaryavOte Samaam Wynford lnrtlalional Champs Bacyras Rday Champa NCC Champs MU-AA Maryavtn Human ap Wyntord Invitational Char Bucyrus Ratay Champs NCC Choi Wynford Dirttatiooal Runnarwnp Crawford Coaoty Relay Huanara-up Maryarills Rslay-Thfrd NOCRuanarwup Saaaa of EigM NCC Championships Fotw Sactional Titles Han barn repnamtod at the State Ned fit Covntjr Six Championships and two Peggy Keller I think It will help the situation to get some new very difficult te sit back and wntci someone else de the teaching. Kellers announcement that she is resigning her coaching positions in girls track and volleyball at Wynford marks the end of a very successful career. Over Kellers eight season at the helm, Wynfords girls track teams have compiled a dual and tri-meet record of 78-2. The last loss came back in 1978 when Keller was on a leave of absence.

Ohio State and Wisconsin had five players each on the squad chosen by the leagues coaches.

Carter was an overwhelming choice after setting several NCAA and school career receiving records and was a unanimous pick from the leagues coaches. Illinois quarterback Tony Eason was also an overwhelming choice for the first team after narrowly missing the same honor last year. Like Carter, Eason is considered a Heisman Trophy candidate. Easons teammate, Mike Bass, was a solid choice for the teams first string kicker. Completing the backfield are the leagues top two rushers, Tim Spencer of Ohio State and Lawrence Ricks of Michigan.

Spencer, a tailback, led a strong Buckeye rushing attack this season while Ricks picked up where Butch Woolf oik left off and led the Wolverines in rushing this year. She now has two children, Chris, five, and Jennifer one. The girls here have a good base to build on and I think it will help the situation to get some new blood into the program.

No doubt about It Beth will be tough to replace," Craig said.

Well have more people shooting, and we hope to replace her points. We dont have one person who will average 15 or 16 points, so we have to get points out of two or three people. i But that (shooting) is also one of our problems. That has to develop, she added. 4 Also gone is point-guard Carol Britton, leaving Craig with only me three juniors and three returning letterwinners for this year.

There are six sophomores on the varsity roster, up from last seasons 5-13 jayvee squad. It take a few years to rebuild, Craig said. Last year was the very beginning. I think that was the worst its go JackLe replacing either forward. Quickness will be one asset this year, and Craig hopes to be able to generate some offense from the fast break.

This year, in Strickland and Plymale, well be able to get that going. Well be able to run this year, because theyre really fast and quick. Were also going to be able play more man-to-man defense with our starters, because of our quickness. We ate improved in that area, she said. Our offense is set-up around the whole team.

Well use all of i our options on offense, because the only way you can win is to score. 'Weve got the scrappiness, the guts and the desire. Now weve got to develop the scoring ability. Craig said she sees Shelby as the class of the NOL. Shelby, no doubt about it Theyre going to overpower a lot of people.
