nr 'CYRUS (OHIO) TELEGRAPH-FOUL? f-Paxe Plfteea ENTERTAINMENT telegraph-forum Lima: UFO study center Tips given on how to find gold in Ohio NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE FORECAST 30 00 SEATTLE ''S-V PAIR 1 fo 7 AM EST )00 I $400 an ounce, even a little is worth a lot That makes it wor- thwhile to go after the deposits ranging from dust to flakes and mall nuggets left behind in the eastern states by Ice-age glaciers from gold-rich Canada, he contends. Not just gold, either. Sharpeyed prospectors can find garnets and sapphires in their pans as well, Papp says. The best method, he suggests, is to look for black or red sand along a creek that indicate the presence of chemicals like iron pyrite frequently found with gold. Then look for a place, a bend, a gulley maybe where heavy gold might get hung up.

And when panning, he said, work slowly. Too many prospectors slosh around the water and lose all the flakes. More experienced now than when he began, Papp relies on a metal detector and sluice to help him find and collect gold. He bases his decisions where to hunt on history books and a heap of geological maps (he tells in his manual where to send away for both), says the best beta are streams in Ross, Clermont, Carroll, Seneca, Licking and northern Richland counties. Gold has been found, he said, in 10 Ohio counties.

Sell By Classified LIMA, Ohio (UPI) Lima may seem like an unlikely place for close encounters of the third kind, but the western Ohio city is home to a branch of an inter- national UFO research organization. The Center for UFO. Studies has its education and business offices in Lima under the leadership of Lima native John P. Timmerman, CUFOS chairman of the board and treasurer. The centers research and investigative operations are headquartered in Evanston, 111.

The center, says Timmerman, was founded in 1973 by astrophysicist and CUFOS scientific director J. Allen Hyneck as a non-profit educational and scientific research facility. CUFOS, which now claims 1,800 members worldwide, is a clearinghouse for reports of UFO sightings and current information on the i subject. There are quite a few UFO organizations in the world but very few are headed by persons with high academic credentials like Dr. Hyneck, Timmerman If said during a recent interview in his office, whose walls are f'l lined with photos and drawings (I of reported UFOs and aliens Su from outer space.

4 i I can say that the center is highly respected throughout the world for its scientific, rather than sensational, approach to the subject, he said. Hyneck, Timmerman noted, served as a technical adviser on the film, Close Encounters of the Third Kind." Although Timmerman has never seen a UFO, he has believed strongly in their existence since 1947. During that year, he read of pilot Kenneth Arnolds sighting of something very strange over the Cascades an event Timmerman calls a milestone in sparking public interest in UFOs. After that, he began read! more and more on the subject, and in the late 1970s, met Hyneck in Lima, where he was giving a speech on UFOs, Hyneck accepted Timmermans offer to help the center, and Timmerman opened the Lima office in 198L CUFOS receives about five reports of sightings each day, but only 5 to 10 percent of them merit classification as UFOs, Timmerman says. StiU, he says, that percentage is increasing.

It used to be that i a lot of the sightings turned out to be aircraft or natural phenomena, but now there seems to be a higher incidence of true unidentified flying objects." A significant number of the sightings are reported by per- 1 sonnet at military bases and atomic energy and power plants. That may be because they have people there 24 hours a day," Timmerman speculates. The UFO reports the center receives are investigated by the centers staff or volunteer researchers, who attempt to find physical evidence or traces of the object and multiple witnesses. Those incidents that merit classification as UFOs are grouped into two broad-categories. They are distant sightings such as nocturnal lights, daylight discs and radar-visuals (unidentified blips on radar screens), or close en- counters of the first, second or third kinds, depending on the degree of interaction between the witness and the UFO.

A close encounter of the third kind was reported at Indian Lake near lima in 19S6, Timmerman says. Two women driving home from the lake one night claimed a structure resembling a boxcar with a floodlight on top landed in the road in front of them. The women said they saw three beings, shorter than normal humans and with arms reaching below their knees, inside the craft While Timmerman acknowledges that many people doubt the existence of UFOs, he says UFOs have been sighted in every part of the world since ancient times. The center currently is investigated a photograph of a saucer-like object with lights taken in Rio de Janiero in 1977. Some may be atmospheric effects we dont yet understand, he said, but just the mass of reports, certain basic similarities between them and the quality of the reports convinces me that this is a phenomenon worthy of someones serious attention, he says.

Many scientists are interested in researching the subject, Timmerman says. Every week we receive letters from scientists who concur it does deserve serious attention and they offer to help us with any cases that might occur in their areas. Those seeking more information can contact the center by writing: Center for UFO Studies, P.O. Box 1402, Evanston, 111., 60204, or P.O. Box 1621, Lima, Ohio, 45802.

The survey shows that seven of Ohios 23-member delegation are Catholics. The survey, conducted by a organization called Americans United for Separation of Church and State, shows 141 Catholics out of the 535 members of the Senate and House.

Dear Abby May Decide the Gloves Hand Model To Take Off After a heart attack STOW, Ohio (UPI) Before the rest of his family gets up for church Sunday mornings, Robert E. Papp goes wading in nearby streams In search of gold. He spends his weekends and vacations too panning Ohio waterways. Yes, gold in Ohio. Papp says its there and hes written a manual (111) on the right equipment, techniques and geology to know to find it.

You may never strike it rich, he tells other would-be prospectors, but there is gold in ranging from dust to flakes and small In three years of goldhunting, Papp has found enough yellow flakes to fill the bottom of a small vial, maybe oneeighth of an ounce refined, but hes still looking for a real good one, a stream that will yield an ounce or so a week. Even If you dont find anything, he says, prospecting is good, cheap fun. You get a lot of exercise, see some great scenery and its exciting. People think Im wacko when they see me in these streams looking, he said. I was in a creek near Belleville with my pants rolled up, panning.

And I saw these people looking, looking. They didnt say anything though. The 51-year-old Papp, a contract construction worker by trade, got to thinking about gold after a conversation with some friends about the climbing price of the metal. Somebody asked why it was never found in Olio or the eastern states, he remembers. That question sent him on a years-long search through the states libraries and historical society records.

No one has searched hard for gold in Ohio, he has concluded, and its never been found in the East in large quantities. But with the price of gold over Italian Ristorante FRIDAY FISH SPECIAL All Tha Full a A on You Cora To Eot With GoriK RraaR -T and Solid Ph. The survey showed 73 con-gressmen are United Methodists; 61 Episcopal; 56 Presbyterian; 47 Baptist and 38 Jewish. Twenty-six denominations were listed in the survey, including four congressmen who said they had no religious affiliation, as well as Eastern Orthodox, Seventh-day Adventist, Christian Science and Armenian Church of America.

Statistics compiled by Albert Menendez, director of research for the survey group, show traditionally dominant Protestant affiliations declining in representation in Congress, while Catholics and Jews have registered the most dramatic increases. In 1962, Methodists were the largest religious group in Congress with 102 members naming that affiliation. In 1972, their numbers had fallen to 84, and by 1982 there were 73. At the same time, Catholic representation grew from 99 in 1962 to 115 in 1972 to 141 in 1982. Jewish representation increased from 11 in 1962 to 15 in 1972 to in 1982.

Menendez said Ohio was perhaps the most Protestant of the large northern Industrial states, despite the large number of Catholics in the state delegation. "Methodists are very strong in southern and central Ohio, he said. Parts of southern Ohio are very fundamentalist. The Catholic centers are in the big cities for the most part He said perhaps the most unusual feature of Ohio's political-religious map was Cincinnatis sizable Jewish community, which typically votes Republican while the rest of the countrys Jews lean strongly toward the Democratic Party. DEjiR ABBY: My problem ia my fiancgf (pother. Shea an outdoor-type woman who haa spent most of Her married life on a ranch. I happen to be a professional hand model and must take good care of my hands and fingernails to keep working. When I visit the ranch with my fiance, his mother ridicules me for protecting my "precious hands.

Recently when she and her daughter were canning beets, my fiance volunteered my help (thanks a lot, Richard)! Im sure he meant well, but when I asked Mother for a pair of rubber gloves so I wouldnt stain my hands, she said, If common household duties are too much for you, Richard will surely starve, and his home will be a pigpen after you two are married. I waited for Richard to say something in my defense. Nothing. Later, all he would say about his mothers insult to me was, Woll, Mother always says whats on her mind. What can I do? HANDS DOWN IN DENVER DEAR HANDS: You can stop expecting Richard to fight your battles.

And you can start telling your future mother-in-law whats on your mind. For openers: Your put-downs hurt me and make me feel unwelcome. And for the grand finale, tell her that you want very much to have a good relationship with her, but if she continues to insult you, you are going to be very hard to find. DEAR DR. LAMB I was a smoker of up to three packs of cigarettes a day for 34 years.

Four years ago I turkey, which was 'tone of the best things I have i ever done. s' My questions are: What condition are the lungs in after not smoking for a number of years? Do the lungs eventually cleanse themselves of all the smoke impurities once you have stopped? If so, how long does it take? DEAR READER -Congratulations. You have already improved your health in many ways. Your risk of heart attacks and strokes has been reversed to the same as if you had never smoked. But the improvements in the lungs are slower.

Some scarring and fibrosis changes that can cause obstruction of the air ways cannot be changed. But there are steady improvements in other problems. The progressive lung damage is stopped. It takes 10 to 15 years to obtain the maximum benefits for your lungs after you have stopped smoking. (NEWSPAPER ENTERPRISE AHN.) 9.4 9 A AO M.

LAMB My mother had a major heart attack nine months ago. It was a myocardial infarction, involving the inside Avail of the heart and the major cause was arteriosclerosis. A month ago she went into the hospital with shortness of breath and went into congestive heart failure. Now we fear she is becoming a cardiac cripple. She is tired, depressed and feels weak with any exertion.

We would appreciate any suggestions in the way of exercise, vitamins and medication. DEAR READER In this day of emphasis on exercise to prevent heart disease sometimes people lose sight of the point that not everyone can exercise after a heart attack. One of my patients is an exceptionally good skier and competes regularly two years after his heart attack. But others are not lucky. It really depends upon how much disease is in the arteries to your heart muscle and just how much of the heart muscle was seriously damaged during the attack.

The fact that your mother developed heart failure manifested with shortness of breath eight months after her attack suggests significant loss of heart muscle, 1 unless she had a new attack and the failure wu from temporary Injury to heart muscle. It is important not to push a person with heart disease beyond his or her physical capability. I approve of exercise but it must be sensible. Only your mothers doctors who know from tests how much heart muscle damage she probably has can really advise her on how much exercise she can do at this point What medicines she may need also depends upon the condition of her heart muscle. Sometimes shortness of breath is temporary but in other cases one of the digitalis medicines is needed to strengthen heart muscle contraction.

If she happens to be overweight, it is important that she lose weight as this can significantly decrease the amount of work the heart must do and may make It possible to do more physically. Yes, people often are depressed when they have had a heart attack. Wouldnt you be? I am sending you The Health Letter 17-10, What You Need to Know About Heart Attacks, for more information. Others who want this issue can send 75 cents with a long, self-addressed envelope for it to me, In care of this newspaper, P.O. Box 1551, Radio City Station, New York, NY 10019.

(, DEAR ABBY: My husband and I have been divorced for two years now, but thems something I need to know. Does he have the right to hit the children if hes not supporting them? JUST ASKING DEAR JUST: In my book, whether hes supporting them or not, he has no right to hit the children. DEAR ABBY: I am 18 and Ive had this problem since eighth grade. In gym one day, a girl said to me, Hey, do you know that one of your breasts is bigger than the other? At first it didnt bother me because I thought every girl had one bigger than the other. But, the older I got, the more noticeable it became to me and to others.

When 1 go shopping, I have to be very careful not to buy anything that fits me too tight I cant even wear a bathing suit or T-shirt without stuffing my left side to match my right side. I cant take it any longer. I was thinking of plastic surgery, but I cant afford it and neither can my mother. Please help me, Abby. I am tired of crying so much over this.

I hate my body and the older I get the worse I feel about it Sign me LOPSIDED AND MISERABLE DEAR MISERABLE: Please dont give up on the idea of plastic surgery. Perhaps you can find a generous surgeon who will help you now and let you pay over time. (You never know until you try.) Until then, go to a hospital supply store that sells prostheses. Foam rubber cups can be purchased to Insert into your bra. They look (and feel) like the real thing.
