Mildren answered "I don't mean this to be bragging but I think our players are good enough to be Number 1 It would be ridiculous for me to say we're Number 3 or 4 Being the best is what it's all about That's why you work so hard starting with pre-season two-a-days I'm sure all of the unbeaten One Oklahoma Sooners' popped TI Number this to be 1 enough to to say we'll all about 1 pre-season expense in their nationally televised game (Channel 3 1:30) Thanksgiving afternoon Not since Bud Wilkinson was the magic name and the rest of the Big Eight Conference was known as "The Seven Dwarfs" has Oklahoma been this close to a national championship Bob Devaney's Nebraska Cornhuskers have been called a lot of things but nobody has accused them of being "Dwarfs" Ironically Nebraska had as tough a row to hoe in reaching the top last year as Oklahoma had this year Until New Year's Day (and New Year's night) only the Carr Sports Ratings had proclaimed the Cornhuskers Number I It took a combination of Texas losing to Notre Dame in the Cotton Bowl Ohio State losing to Stanford in the Rose Bowl and Nebraska coming from behind in the fourth quarter to beat LSU 17-12 in the Orange Bowl for the Big Eight champions to make it In the middle of the season after a 21-21 tie with Southern Cal the 'Huskers were Number 6 Michigan Alabama Auburn and Penn State fans don't agree with the wire service polls Their teams also have claims to the national championship based on perfect records But the champ is still the champ until he's been beaten and nobody has come within 23 points of beating
