The "tiger is the Ohio mus-keliunge, and that fishing hole may be one of many in the Buckeye State stocked with, muskies. The Division of Wildlife publication lists 23 Ohio waters holding the muskie. The top producer, judging from records maintained by the Huskie Muski club, is Leesvillo Lake which produced a total of 122 club-honored fish in 1973.

Others, in the order of their 1973 reported production, Include Piedmont Reservoir, Clendening, Rocky Fork Lake, Clear Fork, Acton and Pymatuning. Several Ohio streams are known to hold muskie populations, including the Mohican River; Olentangy, Paint Creek and andWoif Creek. Muskies Plentiful The Little Miami River, located in southwestern Ohio roughly between Fosters and Cincinnati, does not receive state stockings directly, but gets its muskies via Cowan Creek following stockings in the state lake of the same name. The young fish wander down the creek into the Little Miami, where they find ample food and cover to survive.

1 And grow. Patrick Skidmore, a factory worker from Jamestown, took his best-yet muskie from the Little Miami on July 29. The fish weighed 20 pounds and measured 42 inches long. Skidmore, whose previous best muskie from the river taped 39 Mi Inches, says hes been fishing the stream exclusively for the tigerfish for five years, and always catches a few over the summer. Not too many people realize the Little Miami has a lot of muskies, Skidmore said.

The fish are there if you know how to try for them. Skidmore uses a spinning outfit and regular muskie lures. His lunker fell for a doublespinner Lknday bait. He caught but released a 30-inch fish after landing his lunker. Stocking Program In 1974, the Division of Wildlife announced an updated stocking program whereby planted muskies would be grown to a length of 6 to 8 inches before release.
