i A Ann iummiii mi r-Jm 1U0 I) The Shreveport Journal Friday July 7 1972 i TV Key Mailbag By STEVEN SCIIEUER of our assets as a whole maybe we need something specific to identify with something an Something the biggest the oldest the roundest the squarest the firstest or maybe even the lastest If Calhoun Allen could put on a stone or two we could have the largest mayor Or if Kelly would diet maybe we could have the thinnest chief of police and if Jimmie Goslin would get a new hair-do maybe have the handsomest sheriff although Jimmie is by no means a bad looking lawman HAVING SOMETHING unique apparently means a lot to the morale of any people Nikita Khrshcbev said that w'len he once flew to meet representatives of England the United States and France he landed in a small twin-propeller plane Persons who visit Shreveport and those who have moved here from other areas are pretty well unanimous in saying what a handsome city Shreveport is And with the rains having given a mid-summer greening 1o lawns shrubs and trees the city is as attractive as a Manet picture But those of us who have lived around here all of our lives don't always appreciate what a good place Shreveport is We tend to say the glass plant closed down and now Pennzoil is moving 500 families out and the sky is going to fall Well those things happen in every city in every industrialized society and Shreveport is a long way from becoming a ghost town TO MAKE US properly aware and was embarrassed when he saw the sleek jets the representatives of the three western nations had arrived in Nikita went back to Moscow and called the boys together and when he arrived in Washington to visit President Eisenhower he was in the largest jet plane Any of the three western nations Nikita was trying to impress had the capability of building a plane larger than the Russian aircraft but the mere fact that for several years Russia possessed the iet plane on Earth imnressed nations around the world with the industrial prowess OF COURSE we have Centenary the oldest college west of the Mississippi River but 1 think it was established on the east side of the Mississippi at Clinton and anyway we done anything with that except help build Centenary into a good college It is claimed that the last Confederate flag was furled in Shreveport and if someone would go to the trouble of getting up the necessary money a glass tile mosaic (do they still do those?) could be made to depict the scene and it might attract a lot of tourists and give us something to talk about besides all the oil companies moving out But I believe going to take something that is the to really caWurc our imagination It economically feasible for us to have the largest building or the largest factory We used to have the largest airport but I guess Barksdale No 1 anymore since I see it mentioned as such in the Chamber of Commerce literature I believe that at one time Libbev-fhvei'5-Fo-d had the largest glass plant here and I know that nW so many years ago it was the world's poyt-lacres Rut as mentioned above our alasc out nut is one of the world's saddest stories 'iwui upuiw iwjppiW George Scott star in the movie of a I have seen this film listed in the TV listings in the paper and they never mention his name They always have James Stewart Lee Remick Ben Gazzara and Arthur O'Connell but never Scott I hope thinking of the right film Mrs JF Providence RI A George Scott was featured in the film He played the prosecuting attorney and his performance earned his first Academy Award nomination for best-supporting actor I am fond of Robert Conrad and I heard he was going to have a new TV series next year What will it be and what will he play? LR Oceanside Calif A Robert Conrad has replaced Roy Scheider who was previously announced as the lead in the forthcoming adventure show which is part of the weekly series titled The show is an ABC entrv and will premiere in September Is Shirley Temple related to Paul Lvnde the very funny and talented actor who makes The Hollywood Squares a fun show to watch? I think terrific and I was somewhat surprised when someone said Miss Temple and he were related Mrs EA Albany NV A Paul Lynde is not related to Shirley Temple in any way Has Sammy Davis Jr decided to give it another go and have his own variety show next season?
