THURSDAY JANUARY 2 1984 SHREVEPORT-BOSSIER CITY LA SHREVEPORT JOURNAL But Tennessee not Miami does the damage Tennessee 35 Miami 7 By PAT CALABRIA Newsday NEW ORLEANS When football team scores the crowd sings It sing well but it sings loud And how the sellout crowd of 77432 sang Wednesday night while coated in all shades of Volunteer orange the required attire for the Sugar Bowl Tennessee the team that supposed to have a chance against mighty Miami stunned the Hurricanes and quarterback Vinny Testaverde in a convincing 35-7 victory It was a new version of the Blossom know people were talking last week like already lost" said Tennessee linebacker Kelly Ziegler who lives in Miami "We got sick of Miami (10-2) was ranked No 2 by The Associated Press and had hoped that a victory combined with a loss by Penn State to Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl would have given it at least a share of the national championship But the 10-game winning streak was stopped by Tennessee (9-1-2) which have the distraction of a title to worry about The championship clearly was on the minds of many of those in the Superdome Penn State or no Penn State Miami knew it had to win or risk proving correct the suspicions that the team was overrated to begin with vinced that if they controlled the ball on offense their defense would stop Miami For the rest of the half it did The Volunteers blitzed varied pass coverages and forced Miami to run which what Miami does best Testaverde connected on only two of his first six pass attempts was held to 98 yards passing for the first two quarters and was sacked three times He was sacked seven times overall And once he got the ball Tennessee quarterback Daryl Dickey struck back He threw 6 yards to tight end Jeff Smith for a touchdown on the first play of the second quarter Then helped by a facemask penalty one of 10 infractions the frustrated Hurricanes committed in the first half the Volunteers scored again On first-and-goal from the 9 tailback Jeff Powell bolted to the 1-yard line fumbling the ball as her began to fall The ball rolled over the goal line and receiver Tim McGee jumped on it and tucked it under his belly With 328 left in the half Tennessee had a 14-7 lead The fans in orange were singing and Johnson was watching all his fears become reality was worried about their team all week he said The Tennessee defense which entered the game allowing an average of only 12 points put Dickey in position to add to the lead early in the third quarter What eighth-ranked Tennessee offered on its own behalf was a careful offense a swift secondary and a vast army of fans smothered in orange Even the saloons of Bourbon Street failed to satisfy their thirst for an upset The Volunteers fueled those hopes by replying with five touchdowns after allowing Miami to score on its opening drive All along Tennessee kept insisting it was equal to the challenge and for the first half the Volunteers were more than equal to it had incentive Tennessee coach Johnny Majors said was playing for a national championship We were playing for some respect" Majors has shaped a team that rarely turns over the ball and rarely makes a mistake on defense But Tennessee was caught by surprise five plays into the game when Miami faked a punt from the Tennessee 43-yard line and turned it into a 25-yard gain by fullback Melvin Bratton It was the kind of surprise Miami coach Jimmy Johnson had promised know all about our he said know we do run the ball On the next play Testaverde passed 18 yards to flanker Mike Irvin for a touchdown and a 7-0 lead after four minutes Still the Volunteers were con Tennessee quarterback Daryl Dickey: Sugar AP Laarphoto Bowl MVP PowerTolmprSS(Foul) 10 80 5 10 1 94 AggieForceiFroifer) 4 50 3 40 survived thanks to two brilliant fourth-period defensive stands to earn a 36-16 victory Wednesday in its first Cotton Bowl appearance in 18 years deserved to win" said Jackson who closed out his career at 16th-ranked Auburn on a losing note simply wanted to win the game more than we Jackson had played on three bowl winners coming into the game and had been the MVP at the Liberty and Sugar bowls He ran five yards for a touchdown rushed for 129 yards on 31 carries and turned a screen pass from Pat Washington into 73-yard touchdown in first Cotton Bowl Yet it was failure on two fourth-down plays in the final quarter that doomed the Tigers stopped us when it said Jackson Linebacker Larry Kelm tackled Jack-son for a one-yard loss on the Aggie 3-yard line then cornerback Wayne Asberry did the same thing later on another fourth-and-2 situation at the 27 expected Bo to run the ball in those CAMPBELL CONFERENCE Norris Division fourth-down situations and he did" said Aggie noseguard Sammy "We were ready He made some big plays but so did The demoralized Tigers then yielded Kevin 9-yard scoring pass to Keith Woodside and Anthony 1-yard TD run to turn a 21-16 nail-biter into a rout stopped Bo when we had said Texas Coach Jackie Sherrill fourth down on the goal and the fourth down at midfield were the two big plays without a Jackson said two touchdowns I scored couldn't even compare to what they did to us twice down there on their end of the Jackson won the MVP balloting by only seven votes over Murray who passed for a Cotton Bowl record 292 yards and one touchdown The old Cotton Bowl passing mark of 231 yards was held by Notre Joe Theismann in 1970 Texas safety Domingo Bryant who had two interceptions was the defensive MVP Wednesdov's Results Cowboys running back Tony Dorsett was the poster on his wall Woodside swiped that poster or at least him teammates think he did "One day my Tony Dorsett poster was Aggies fullback Roger Vick said "I didn't even have to ask who took it Every time Cowboys' games come on Keith is talking about Tony He says Tony this and Tony that This is the way Tony does "When Keith was a freshman he wore No 32 He told the coach must have 33 Tony Woodside a 5-11 192-pound sophomore from Vidalia La met Dorsett this week at one of the Cotton Bowl workouts Dorsett played for coach Jackie Sherrill at the University of Pittsburgh was on Cloud Vick said Woodside inspired by meeting Dorsett scored two touchdowns to help the Aggies to a 36-16 victory over Auburn in Cotton Bowl With the Aggies trailing 7-6 in the first quarter Woodside showed fancy footwork in scoring on a 22-yard run He took a hand-off from quarterback Kevin Murray ran around the right side and following a block by fullback Anthony Toney cut back across the field to give the Aggies a one- point lead He grabbed a nine-yard scoring pass from Murray in the final three minutes to extend the lead to 29-16 Woodside caught three passes for 88 yards including a 41-yarder and rushed for 32 yards on three carries expected Vick and Toney to get the Woodside said they gave me and Harry Johnson the ball a good bit too I was excited" Woodside playing in the shadow of Vick and Toney had done little this season until he gained 104 yards on 12 carries in a 19-17 victory over SMU "After that game I said to Keith me tell you why you played so Sherrill said "He said don't have to tell me I know what the difference went on to tell me that when he came out of high school with all that publicity and pressure it affected him He had to get over that I think he showed he has He was outstanding Woodside gained more than 2000 yards his senior year of high school and was one of the state leaders inrushing He was an avid college football fan then and his favorite athlete was Auburn running back Bo Jackson Jackson this Heisman Trophy winner gained 129 yards on 31 carries against the Aggies He rushed for one touchdown and scored on a 73-yard pass reception wanted to show Bo I could compete on the same Woodside said How Top 20 fared How the Top Twenty teomi in tM Associated Press college football poll forpd In Bowl games-No 1 Penh Stole
