opened Sunday night at the Shubert Theater But that doesn't tell the whole story The novelist drama i obviously is pretty unhappy about the way all of the prime movers have been conducting our affairs in modern times although somehow he manages to leave out Presidents Wilson and Roosevelt who if I recall my history had a lot to do with what Vidal is criticizing As for President Nixon the author takes him from his humble beginnings right through yesterday's or is it headlines the Vietnam War inflation unemployment and so on Vidal takes most of his dialogue from public and private utterances of the President over the years filling in with comments about actions for which no accompanying Nixon quotes are available HOWEVER VIDAL is not too happy about much of anyone involved in American policy and he has darts for almost everyone from George Washington to the present The Kennedys Eisenhower Stevenson Johnson Dewey Humphrey Agncw all there as well as some others in past and present its founding to go a i on an empirical scale and thus endangering its chances of survival It is a busy husy production under the spirited direction of Edwin Sherin with a large cast impersonating dozens of characters in flash bits that hit all of the high spots of the Nixon public career IT IS not dull Much of any appreciation of the show from the audience standpoint will come from the political feelings of viewers The play certainly is not pro-Nixon but it is not all anti-Nixon because Vidal also is rough on others The late President Kennedy gets a going over in regard to the Cuban crisis Vietnam and asserted failure to accomplish any reforms in his truncated administration Lyndon Johnson gets the Vietnam treatment from Vidal Washington serves as a sort of judge of the proceedings placed high on a platform at stage rear with Kennedy and Eisenhower on either side The rapid action takes place below and in front of them as Washington and the two others comment from time to time IN' FACT if anyone comes off well it is Washington although Vidal does get in a little dig that he hesitate to make a considerable fortune through his political position It is Washington who frequently queries Kennedy and Eisenhower espcially the former as to their motives while in office whether they didn't realize the dangers in taking the empire route instead of minding this
