day Ole Miss edged the Tigers 27-24 "Win lose or draw the Georgia Lions want LSU in the Peach Bowl We have LSU as our first choice" commented representatives of the classic They related that the LSU football games are broadcast into one of the Atlanta stations as a member of the Tigertown football network And the railroad man Jim Corbett daddy of the Peach but no relation to the ex-athletic director and late Jim Corbett advised he is an ardent fan of the Tigers Although this Corbett is blind he can talk about LSU and relate names of long time ex-players and various games of importance NOW LSU'S 31-27 upset of Florida State in the first Peach Bowl will go into the books as one of the biggest of all LSU bowl trips This time head Coach Charley McClendon put the taste of defeat on his long time buddy and former coaching mate Bill Petersen of Florida State After getting his boys into the dressing room at Georgia Tech's Grant Field McClendon called for the team to kneel in silent prayer of thanks Then he told the boys they didn't know how much this one meant to the staff "This was a big victory and I want to thank everyone of you guys said the head coach LSU's Tigers not only won the game but they had two of the players voted by the press coop as the outstanding offensive and defensive individuals Quarterback Mike Hillman took the offensive trophy and sophomore Buddy Millican took the defensive citation "We beat 'em at their own game" said McClendon as he studied the statistics of the game SINCE ARRIVAL here the entire travelling party had the feeling of an LSU upset victory Among Shreveporters here were Mr and Mrs Tom Tanner Monday morning McClendon advised that the two coaches approached by Bill Beall about shifting to Baylor had declined and will stay on the Tigertown staff "We were in the right frame of mind we wanted a victory we were determined to succeed and we did" said the chief mentor Mclendon is the same coach who in years past upset Texas in halftime lead last niht and were never in danger of being overtaken Foster Thomas came up with 31 points as the locals to gain revenge for By JIMMY BULLOCK Journal Sports Editor ATLANTA Ga Charlie McClendon LSU's head coach was a happy man following the final whistle in the Tigertown teams' 31-27 upset of Florida State in the first annual Peach Bowl Monday night at Georgia Tech's stadium The bowl was sponsored by the Georgia Lions for Prevention of Blindness and the Lighthouse for the B'ind "I am proud of this squad for coming up with the big win and this coaching staff will never forget it We did a good job on Ron Sellers early in the gam but he came back to prove what a great player he really is It took a tremendous effort on the part of our entire LSU squad to win this one and we made adjustments well curing the game" Gerry Kent was injured in the first quarter He was supposed to cover Sellers We mixed our defenses and came up with an effective pass rush We gave the ball to Florida State four times in the first half It speaks well for our defenses not to allow them but 13 points after giving them so many opportunities We used a four man front We did not stick to our basic defense 'THAT PUNT return by Burns really gave us momentum but we wanted to come up with a balanced offense I would spy we beat them at their own game Tommy Morel gave us a great catch on the last scoring drive and our offensive line gave us a tremendous job when we needed clutch yardage "This win means a lot to me and my staff and I will always be proud of this squad The Peach Bowl did a wonderful job of entertaining the people hen tonight" Bill Petersen of Florida State said "good football teams win the close ones and LSU is a good football team I thought the big plays were LSU's punt Czechs Winners MINNEAPOLIS ST PAUL (AP) The Czechoslovakia junior hockey team scored a 7-3 victory over the US All-Stars Monday night return in the first half and the Morel catch on their last drive "I WAS PROUD of our Florida State boys and the way they kept coming back We hurt ourselves in the first half with a lot of mistakes We just couldn't get consistency in our offense We were not hitting our passes and we didn't make the big catch The LSU pass rush was the best we faced all season Cappleman was dropped for losses at least 7 or 8 times and that's the most that has happened "We made some good catches in the second half and it heiped get our offense started We moved Sellers to flanker and it opened him up giving the LSU defense a bit more trouble "OUR GAME plan was to try to get out in front so that they wouldn't be able to play ball control and keep ramming at us I thought we did a good job when -we had the 13-0 lead Then the LSU punt return by Bi'rns picked the Tigers up I was worried at the half that we wouldn't be able to keep up with the LSU substituting and that they would wear us down late Our players did a wonderful job of coming back and it was just a matter of who had the ball last" Referee Stops Wrestling Bout referee just didn't understand that Sputnick Monroe and Chief Big Heart had come to fight as they squared off in the final bout of last night's wrestling card at the Municipal Auditorium and he disqualified both when they refused to stop their fist swinging when called upon to do so Both were disqualified after having won one fall each and
