BRUNSWICK, Maine (AP) -John J. "Jack" Magee, former Bowdoin College track coach for 42 years and four-time U.S. Olympic coach, died Monday at a hospital here. He would have been 85 Jan. 12.

Before retirement in 1955, Ma- pcc coached Bowdoin teams lo 20 state championships in 37 years of competition that spanned both world wars. The titles included nine in a row. An Olympic learn coach from 1932. re- fuse'd to accept the same assignment in 1936 because he felt Ihe Games should not have been hold in Nazi Germany. Magee helped lead a fight to withhold American participation in the '36 games, and when his side lost, he severed his connections wilh ihc American Olympic organization.

NORWEGIAN SETS SKI JUMP MARK GARMJSCH PARTENKIRCH- EN, Germany (UPI)--Norwegian aspirations for Olympic medals in ski jumping received a furlher boost Monday when world champion Bjoern Wirkola soared to a record 305 feet in an internalional meel.

Hurling himself into the winter air from Garmisch's Olympic springboard, the 24-year-old Norseman, who won two gold medals in Ihe 1966 world championships, landed al the 292-foot marfc in his first glide and reached the record shattering distance in his second turn. The competition, held in ideal snow conditions, ended in a battle between Wirkola, East Germany's 26- ycarold Dieter Neuendorf, who won a silver medal in the 1966 world championship's small hill jump, and Jiri Raska of Czechoslovakia. Wirkola headed the intermedi ary standings after the first run with 115.4 points. Following him were Raska, with 113.7 and Neuendorf, winner of Sunday's Obcrstdorf jump, with 111.1 points. The Russians, who only a few winters ago had posed a serious challenge to the Scandinavians, showed that things are not running very smoothly for them in (he new season.

Gari Napulkov emerged as the best Russian with a 13th spot at Oberstdorf Sunday, and shared place with Yugoslavia's Petar Erzcn here Monday. The Americans, who came to Europe with veteran John Balfanz, 16-year-old Jerry Marlin and John Bower of Auburn, Maine, among others were no match for the Scandinavians, East Germans and others in Ihe first two slages of the tourney.
