Mainwaring's The Shutter Clicks No doubt about it, flash is used far more often than any other type of artificial light source for pictures taken around the house. But all too many users of flash units either bulb or electronic types, don't get the full potential from their equipment. Most of them, faced with a picture situation calling for the use of flash, take the easy way out, leaving their flash gun mounted on the camera Actually, there is i wrong with this approach to flashlvanced cameras, including those photography. In some situations, whose flash units plug directly it is the only practical way tolinto the camera body with no get the picture. Howejer, con- connecting cord, slant use of straight on-camera Truly professional results can flash brings with it a monotonous -sr fr sparkle into home pictures: MUCH MORE pleasing effects, particularly in close-ups, can be had from direct flash if the'flash gun Is removed from Hie camera and held above it and to one side.

From this position the light will strike the subject downward from one side, giving a highlight and shadow effect that will bring out the contours and texture of the subject. Unwanted subject shadows will be cast down and flash helps preserve a natural to one side, out of camera range. Another form of off-camera flash is bounce flash, so-called because the light from the flash gun is not aimed directly at the subject, but is bounced from a ceiling or wall to the subject. Bounce feeling to the picture and can be used effectively with color as! well as black-and-white films. White and gray surfaces work best for shooting color pictures with bounce flash.

If a blue ceiling is used, the subject will be given a bluish cast as the light from the flash unit picks up the color of whatever surface it hits. Unless such off-color effects are desired, avoid shooting in rooms with any but neutral-toned ceilings and walls. COMPUTING EXPOSURE for bounce flash is not as easy as when direct flash is used. Such factors as ceiling height and tone have a decided effect on exposure results. A relatively low, light-colored ceiling will reflect more light to the subject than would a high, dark one.

As a rough guide, in an average-size living room, try opening the lens two stops more than the same shot would take if direct flash were being used. Good flash technique comes with lots of shooting under a wide variety of room conditions. A COILED-TYPE flash cord is a virtual necessity for successful off-camera use of a flash gun. With the addition of a second flash unit, a sparkling dimensional look can be obtained that impossible to get with only one flash.

Side or backlighting from a slave unit adds brilliance to direct flash shots as well as helping to model subject contours. Slaves used with either direct or bounce flash enable the photographer to cover a greater area than would be possible with just one unit at the camera.
