1 S- HUNTER STILL BAD. The Murderer of Homer Holland, Submits to Punishments, but Will Not Work. Ft. Madison, Jan. Hunter is proving to be the most in- "tractable prisoner in the history of the prison at this place.

Homer Holland's slayer is a terror to the warden and submits to any form of punishment prescribed by the rules rather than to go to work. He is sullen, morose and mean. He realizes that he could complete his sentence in thirteen years by working, while his present course will mean that he must endure all manner of hardships for full twenty-live years, but he says he don't care. Hunter's theory is that the state owes 3iim a living. "I'm entitled to the best you've got down here," says he to the warden, "and propose to have it.

I certainly shall not work a lick for the state. Now go ahead and do your worst." "When the judge who sentenced Hunter after he was convicted the second time, little less than a year ago, sentenced Mm to but twenty-live years instead of life imprisonment, which was his former sentence, every one thought him very lucky. But Matt Hunter was mad. He thought it an outrage that he should be returned to prison at all. He made up liis mind from that hour to bo a bad man and he has carried out his purpose.

When he was taken back to Warden Jones.by the sheriff, he told the warden that he would not work. He was reminded that it would make a big difference in his sentence and comfort, but Hunter said he didn't care. He was then placed in the "third grade." This includes a small number of prisoners who are the worst in the institution. They are kept looked up in their cells and are permitted only the plainest kind of food. They are allowed a liberal quantity, but it is decidedly unattractive.

They are allowed a bible and one book each week. They are not allowed to receive visitors nor to write or receive letters except upon the most important business. They are allowed no newspapers. All these privileges are enjoyed by prisoners of the first grade who to entitle them to them, have but to perform their share of the work in the work shops. They usually prefer -work with the comparative freedom it carries with it, to the loneliness of the solitary cell.

Then, too, the tobacco, the newspapers, the visitors, the letter, the mess table and all other comparative comforts are in marked contrast with the fate of the "third grade" man. But Matt Hunter chose to be a third 1st Bargain 150 Men's Pants Half Price Come and See Them 2nd Bargain lot children's underwear go at lot children's underwear go at. Thus will the leap year girl propose. And thus does she dream ahead of the year to come, thinking of the day when she may offer heart and hand to the' man of her choice and feel that it is no shame to do so. She will trust to the fate which hovers over all good loving maids for a favorable answer, and so she will become a leap year maid. Toast the maid's Leap Yeare! But Its real import is grasped by few except the scientists and of these none but the astronomer himself could tell you exactly why it is. There is a vague notion that leap year is caused by some flaw in the making our time calendars, and that there is a loss, in some manner, of six hours every year. Our time does not quite tally with the sutl's "It was almost a miracle. Burdock Blood Bitters cured me of a terrible breaking out all over the body.

Leap year enables the astronomers to square things with the sun and to keep the old earth moving along just as it should move.
