Nation's Largest Upon Completion HOUSTON of what is expected to become the largest single underground storage reservoir for liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) in the nation has been started near here Millard Neptune senior vice president of Texas Eastern Transmission Corp said here The site is at the center of the Barber's Hill salt dome a giant underground deposit of pure salt located on State Highway 146 near Mont Belvieu about 25 miles east of here Neptune said The first storage well commonly known as a "jug well" was spudded Wednesday and will be drilled to about 3500 feet or about 2500 feet into the salt Upon completion of the well fresh water will be used to wash out a cavity in the salt which will hold 21000000 gallons of LPG A second jug well Of the same capacity is planned later this summer I Line Also Planned When completed this fall both wells will aggregate a storage of 42000000 gallons which will be used as an accumulation terminal for LPG produced in the Texas Gulf Coast area and destined for shipment through Texas Eastern's Little Inch pipe line to midwestern and eastern markets The company also will construct a 12-inch pipeline this summer to connect the Mont Belvie0 terminal with the Little Inch pumping bon at Baytown Neptune said storage terminal will great ly increase the flexibility of Texas Eastern's petroleum products line Operations Shippers will be able to deliver LPG through pipelines to the Mont Belvieu storage wells at small intermittent rates of flow From there the accumulated LPG will be pumped in periodic batch movements ward in the Little Processes Seal Out Water Air or Gas Drilling To Benefit Greatly From New Techniques PITTSBURGH Pa The number of drilling operations where air or gas can be used as a circulating fastest most economical type of drilling is expected to be materially increased by nekif processes developed by Gulf Oil Corp for sealing water out of the well bore Savings up to 25 per cent over conventional methods are produced by airgas use chiefly because it increases the rate of drill penetration Airrgas has even helped drive holes at averages of over feet per day in formations where water-circulating wells lumbered down at 175 feet daily It has increased footage per drill bit as much as ten fold Further the airgas method permits the geological characteristics of the well to be more accurately evaluated does not damage the formation as mud and water can do and eliminates costly losses of the tirilling fluid Heretofore these benefits were limited to the few wells that are naturally dry throughout This is because inflowing water changes drill cuttings into a gummy mass which air cannot move and which jams the drillpipe Victory over the watery wells did not come easily The company faced touch the same problem as a householder with a leaky cellar wall Sealants plastered on the inside of such a wall lack roots to hold against the water pressure which thus usually breaks through In a well the problem is complicated by both higher pressure and the difficulty of anchoring a sealant over a leaking area invisible to the driller Previous unsuccessful or uneconomical water shutoff attempts included forcing in plugs with explosives and injecting gelatins fluid plastics or combinations of chemicals Water Isolated Gulf solves the dilemma by first isolating a well's water-producing zone by means of packing above and sometimes below it In the first of the new processes a chem "AA" Quality SIRLOIN 1101 STEAKS lb CHOICE STEAKS I 3-0z I 1 lc ea 12-0z 79c ea 4-0z 21c ea 44 -0 0 zz 1 miscible projects will be used more widely More and more operators feel that water injection in conjunction with LPG or enriched gas may be the answer Success of three current projects where water is being used would give miscible drive a big boost Another problem is amount of LPG needed in projects which use the LPG slug method followed by injection of dry gas Operators also find room to disagree over whether miscible drive will work in very low-pressure reservoirs the importance of certain reservoir characteristics and amount of free as in a reservoir before it becomes a deterring factor Third Crop of Oil Some operators are willing to gamble that miscible drive can give them a third crop of oil after water flooding has already taken a second One project is already under way in Oklahoma in a field already swept by the older water-flood method Two more will he started this summer But tertiary recovery presents even more unknowns than the more conventional type of miscible drive One big question is how much LPG will be needed There is hardly any information avallahle on how fast an LPG bank will dissipate on continued contact with water Current Projects Of the 39
