A Not for one minute The previous column noted that every business has expenses A mutual fund is no exception I explained that these expenses vary from one fund to another and wrote that "you'll find them spelled out in the prospectus published by each mutual fund" That's how the people who run the fund make money where In the case cited here this particular mutual fund had total income of $2182664 in the form of dividends and interest on the stocks and bonds it holds AFTER PAYING ITS $265- 931 expenses the fund had net income of $1916733 That amount became available to be passed on to shareholders of the mutual fund as dividend income I bought some mutual funds last year At the time of the purchase I paid about $300 commission Can I deduct that amount as an expense item on the income tax return I file for last year? A No Any' commission charge you pay when you purchase mutual fund shares or other securities is not a deductible expense item in the manner you have in mind THAT CHARGE INCREASES the price you pay and is added to your cost The total amount you pay is your "cost basis" Then if you sell you use the cost basis to figure your capital gain (if you have a profit) or your capital loss (if you have a loss) (Mr Doyle will answer only representative letters of general interest in his column He cannot answer phone queries) 461s 193a 8334 16 5211 23 5814 11 4014 2914 57 7411 2314 304 6314 86114 52 163i 52'4 4414 7814 41 7211 1934 72114 2171 1831 45114 1414 50'4 4134 734 5541 2134 6714 3514 3314 1814 6034 1014 6574 5034 62114 4114 67 34 71114 61 211 1771 231 1434 60 Abbott 90 8 Abt Con 10 30 ACE Ind 250a 30 AU Millis 4ta 8 Address 120 57 Admiral 198 Air Red 250 Alin LP kGe 11 Allegh Lud 2 28 Alleg Pw 106 39 AlliedCh 180 13 Allied Strs 3 18 AllisChal 50 92 Alum Ltd 80 88 Alcoa 140 20 Amerada 240 60 AmAirlin 125 54 A Bosch 50e 18 AmBdcst 140 16 Am Can 2 20 Am Cyan 2 91 AmElPw 124 31 Am Enka 2a 46 AmFPowl 6 AHome 156a 40 Am Hosp 35 6 Am MFd 90 239 AMet CI 160 87 Am Motors 1 78 AmNGas 170 16 AmOptic 110 7 AmPhoto 20 48 Am Smelt 2 23 Am Std 1 51 Am 2 238 Am Tob 160 AMP Inc 50 61 Ampex CO Amph Borg 1 6 Anacon 250e 270 Anken Ch 20 7 ArmcoSt 3 20 Armour 160b 60 ArmstCk 110 18 Ashl Oil 160 12 AssdDG 160 31 Atchison 160 4 56 AtICLine 2e 2 AtiRet 240 8 Atlas CD 44 Auto Cant AO 3 Avco Coro 1 55 Avnet 20 AvonProd 80 136 811111 Owensl II 250 81'1 OxfdPa0 120 1434 Vs I 110 3834 V2 ell ell ell 1514 8654 41s 82 15 39 16112 21 2714 36 831 4654 694 16V2 21 2712 36 VI 4456 6934 30 6 5 15 109 35 55 16 44 26 17 13 30 3 16 A4 26 17 13 30 3 8141 14si 3814 16'4 2011 27 3534 164 2034 27 3534 0-P 57 2856 6 6414 6336 38 446 4334 88 474 46'4 200 1634 la's 4 10912 109 24 3714 3654 29 35'4 35 34 14 11112 9 3034 30V2 240 294 2876 22 8234 8236 10 51'4 5012 159 3434 33-34 32 456 45 14 1734 1676 40 68 6734 2 385i 38511 117 4156 4116 109 5034 4912 21 6776 6712 85 5434 Si 21 7234 7196 30 3774 3712 15 3776 3712 13 7812 78 43 5756 5676 30 4436 4334 129 7234 7176 24 16 1512 435 5034 496 64 7812 7734 36 812 836 42 4356 43 380 61 6034 35 lly 3o12 2872 5012 334 45 6716 3" 4112 4912 6712 715i 32v2 37'12 5612 7176 1512 4911 7734 1339 43 6014 OTI1ER EXPENSES (stock transfer dividend disburse- ment custodian and registrar legal audit and registration fees printing postage etc) came to $41014 Those expense-es plus the management fee penses for the year to $265- peenscs for the year to $265- shade more than one-half of 1 per cent of the fund's assets This is known as the "expense relationship of total expenses to net assets Some funds have lower expense ratios some higher Where does the money come from to meet these expenses? grand jury irdictment alleging he participated in turning run-of-the-mill nickels into collectors' items The indictment said Burns was involved in a scheme to convert commonplace five-cent pieces into highly prized specimens from the Denver mint for the year 1950 Such coins command prices of up to $25 each because of their rarity One method of changing a nickel to the 1950-D variety is to secure a 1959-D coin and remove the "9" Then the "0" from a 1960 nickel is lifted and put on the 1959 coin in place of the "9" Burns was the first person to be arrested locally on secret indictments returned Tuesday by the grand jury for the Western District of Louisiana at Lafayette Ile was picked up by deputy US marshal Anglin this morning at a downtown drugstore US Commissioner Loret Ross said Burns was released under $1000 bond a Un Oil 34 Un Pac 180 7 THE ASSOCIATED Press av Un Tank 180 28 erage of 60 stocks at noon was I ILljnnitAiki-rctit53 47334 up 9 at 3376with industrials up Unit Co 35e 10
