Extra officers were called to the scene Salt Lake City and County lawmen search murder suspect Douglas A. Yoakam after her. Miss Roberson is in critical condition at St. Marks Hospital. Two hours after the shooting, Salt Lake City Police and Salt Lake County Sheriffs officers arrested a suspect on information given investigators by the wounded woman.

Capt. Hayward said an autopsy Wednesday will determine how many times Mr. Taufer was struck by bullets. Miss Roberson was hit four times. Detectives found 14 expended casings at the scene, six miles up this canyon.

The suspect was arrested at 1591-300 East, about 3 A British-made machine pistol and several other weapons were found in the attic of the house, Capt. Hayward said. He identified the suspect, who has been booked into Salt Lake City-County jail, as Douglas Alan Yoakam, 28, of that address. In a sequence of events as outlined by Capt. Hayward and Chief Deputy Sheriff Kenneth Hamraon, Miss Roberson had spent the morning hiking near the top of the canyon.

As she returned to her pickup truck, she was accosted by a man who said he was going to rape her. As she started to struggle with him, Mr. Taufer, who was en route to his cabin in the canyon, stopped to help her. He was able to get between the woman and her assailant when the assailant backed into the road and began firing. Four other witnesses who drove past the fight on the way down the canyon, turned around and returned to the scene.

The shooting was over at this time, Chief Deputy Hammon said. Lying Alongside Truck They found Mr. Taufer lying alongside the womans pickup truck, and the critically wounded woman on the trucks seat. One witness raced to Log Haven, about three miles down the canyon, and notified the sheriffs office by telephone. County Fire Department paramedics praised the other witnesses who had stabilized Miss Roberson with first aid.

She was conscious when they arrived. Mr. Taufer was dead. Capt. Hayward said Miss Roberson was able to give the first deputies on the scene a good description of the suspect, his car and the license number.

Trace City Address The Salt Lake address was traced and city police made one pass by the home and the car was not there. On the second pass the car had returned and police and deputies arrested the suspect as he walked up to the house. He had apparently gone to a coin-operated laundry with Us young daughter. Utah Dry Everyone was expecting rain and maybe snow across the valleys of northern Utah Tuesday, but Mother Nature didnt cooperate. The storm front went through all right, but the moisture-laden clouds following it swerved to the north into Idaho, Wyoming and Montana, although some snow and rain was measured in southern Utah. Some snow shower activity was noted in the Oquirrh, Wasatch and Uinta mountains early in the day. Up to a quarter of an inch of precipitation was measured in southern Utah.

The frontal cooled temperatures with Salt Lake City recording a high of 62 degrees compared with Mondays high of 79. The forecast for Wednesday calls for fair to partly cloudy skies in the region with some warming. Dan Valentines By George Raine and Wilf Cannon Tribune Staff Writers More than 30 area lawmen Tuesday afternoon participated in an hour-long police drama that included the arrest of a suspect in a murder, shooting and sexual assault in Millcreek Canyon, and the confiscation of a cache of weapons that could have equipped an army. No shots were fired. The suspect was not even at home when the siege began, but subsequently arrived, looking like any of the 100 or so onlookers.

He was pushing a carriage with his daughter who looked to be about 18 months old. He simply asked what was going on. Douglas Alan Yoakam, about 28, was then arrested. All of this occurred about one hour after a crime took place about eight miles up Millcreek Canyon, shortly before 1 a man was assaulting a woman in the canyon when a man passing by tried to intervene. He was shot and killed by the attacker.

The woman was then shot four times. Although critically wounded, she gave authorities the license plate number and a description of the suspects car, leading lawmen to Yoakams address, 1591-3rd East. When lawmen found a huge cache of weapons in the house, and because they were uncertain whether anyone was in hiding, they filled the house with tcargas. It was aimed at the attic, where a 9-mm automatic weapon had been found. It had been recently fired, and was stained with blood.

The action took place on a quiet residential street directly across from the playground of Whittier Elementary Shot, Killed from the building on 4800 South and around an adjacent house, and were last seen in the area of a nearby service station. The shooting took place in an office-laboratory area adjacent to the waiting room where several patients were sitting, the officer said. Several of those persons were being interviewed by Murray detectives late Tuesday. Det. But the activity drew a crush of reporters and residents, who had to be constantly told to keep their distance. When teargas filled the air, onlookers moved back.

Throughout this time city and county officers probed Yoakams house and lot and his blue sedan, which matched the description given by the female victim. The interior was splattered with blood. Also in the car were handcuffs, rope, rubber gloves and a clip that could fit in the 9-mm weapon located in the house. One investigator, Salt Lake City Police Det. Don Bell, said it included more automatic weapons than you need to equip an army with.

Det. Bell told reporters that Yoakam is a licensed firearms dealer, but still to be determined is whether the license covers all the found weapons. There were machineguns, a sub-machinegun, automatic rifles, hunting rifles, shotguns, knives, pistols, a Luger, gun powder, bullet-proof vests and more, along with many boxes of assorted ammunition. There were also photographs of various dangerous weapons. Yoakam watched most of the probing.

He was handcuffed in a sheriffs car parked alongside the house. Also in the course of the investigation, Yoakams wife arrived. She looked stunned. She and the child were taken to the Metropolitan Hall of Justice for questioning. Yoakam, who had walked home from a laundromat, was driven away.
