By The Associated Press Southeastern Conference football squads were off to a good start on the first day of practice working on fundamentals and getting in shape for the games to come this fall Coaches generally were optimistic about the ability of their re spective charges and one Bobby Dodd of Georgia Tech promptly began an experiment with the two-platoon system Dodd Monday divided his squad into two 33-man groups one for offense and one for defense and coaches and players alike seemed enthusiastic "If we can work out the mechanics to use the boys platoon wise in games under the present rules I believe it will strengthen the team" Dodd said Auburn Coach Ralph Jordan sent his 1957 national champion Tigers through light morning and afternoon drills "I think we're far ahead of any past year" he said "The boys look to be in finer con-dawn and more confident than ever before" Asked if this included last season's NO 1 team in the nation Jordan said "these boys look even Sharper than last year's squad" All 59 candidates turned out for the workouts The Mississippi squad worked out in full gear in sultry weather Left end Billy Templeton and center Milton Crain were the plan to make presentday tennis come alixe again His suggestions include simpler scoring shorter matches best-of-three instead of best-of-five) and "elimination of many of the sticky traditions dating back to the time when tennis was strictly a society game" WE CAN UNDERSTAND several of the veteran's suggestions but the "sticky traditions" he criticizes might stand a second look He specifically mentions two: that a competitor must never give way to a show of temperament on the court and that spectators must remain quiet while the ball is in play Without these regulations we'd have dozens of prima donnas tossing their rackets at every muffed shot and the roar of the crowd during a set point would resemble the atmosphere at a basketball game during an overtime period 0 THAT WOULD UNDOUBTEDLY make the sport more colorful but what price "color?" We happen to appreciate the fact that there's still one sport we can fall back on where winning isn't everything where such "archaic traditions" as sportsmanship and fair play still hold up If a sports fan wants to boost his ulcer output let him hang from the rafters in a smoke-filled basketball gym fight the mobs at the football turnstiles or throw bottles at umpires But leave tennis alone It's still a game of sport THE PLAYERS SERVED as their own officials throughout the recent Louisiana State Open tournament and we didn't see a single bad call In fact several seemed to bend the 'other way and play balls that were slightly out-of-bounds Could that have been possible with the pressure of a howling crowd bearing down on every shot?
