Poem Written by James Edwin Campbell The following poem expressing a longing for home and its comforts is full of tenderest pathos It was the last bit of verse written by theauthr James Edwin Campbell Mr Campbell was born at Run a little settlement back in the hills from Pomeroy hardly large enough to be dignified with the name of a hamlet about-29 years ago He attended school at Pomeroy graduating from the high school there At an early age he evinced a talent for writing poetry and dialect stories and before he had completed school had published a book of very meritorious pomes Among his earlier poems was Tlie which partook of the style In Lalla Bookh After finishing school Mr Campbell taught until about a year ago writing poems and dialect stories at his leisure hieh were readily accepted by eastern magazines and press syndicates Last summer he went to Chicago to engage in uewspaptr work having accepted a position on one of the large papers in that city Fla route to his new field he stopped over to visit for a day and in conversation with a friend said: Life is too uneventful in a little village want to get out into the great This was ia the middle of last summer and in a few short months we find him longing anil sighing for the of tlie home tirfed ot the great restless surging mass and lie gave expression to this longing for home in tlie following poem which was writttn December 7 1895 and published in the Chicago Conservator Shoitly alter writing this he left to spend the Christmas holidays with the old folks at home While home he contracted a cold which turned into a fever and hardly were tlie holiday festivities over in-fore the life of James twin Campbell had passed into tlie world beyond His death following so quickly after lie had written his last poem renders it all tlie mure pathetic and this last bit of verse may have been wiillen with a premonition of death In all of iiis writings there wis a religious purity and a touching simplicity The poem reads: HOMESICK to get buck want I) 01 want to i want PLEASANT HtMB Service Sunday morning Burger Mias Emma Hiemschneider spent a week at Nevada Honor Wert expects to open law office at the dead and wounded who were ground up in tho railroad carnage of Thursday night This railroad accident possibly the worst in all the experience of eastern roads will be felt in Atlantic City for months to come Yesterday in the wards of the hospital the scene was shocking beyond description In passing down the corridor and entering a room opening upon it there were to be seen those who had been injured in the collision stretched out on their couches in all degrees of suffering The air was filled with the groans of men the cries of women and the sobbing of children The dead were all gathered at the old Sea View Excursion house which was improvised into a morgue The bodies were laid about tlie lloor of the big dancing hall of the pavilion in rows It was a horrible sight The corpses were in all conditions of mutilation There were headless armless and legless trunks in some instances crushed out of all semblance of recognition There were 37 bodies on view Moving through tlie horrible mass were streams of people some eurious but a majority looked for lost loved ones or friends An excursion party of about 400 people were brought down Thursday from Bridgeton Millville and Morris River They represented four tribes of Red Men and on account of their numbers two trains were made up for tho evening return one to depart at and the other a few hours later The 0:30 was a few minutes behind in starting and after crossing the drawbridge was halted on the meadows to wait for a couple of downward trains It was this delay that brought collision and death and the solution of the action falls upon George Houser the man in the tower and John Greiner the engineer of tho excursion train Edward Karr tho Reading engineer retnainei at his post while his engine plowed its way through the special train and was killed outright Ilis mistake if he made one meant his death and his lips can never tell the story But the living who were in tho awful wreck furnish a reason for the accident which goes to indicate that Farr disregarded the red signal when it was Hashed his way He was running the fast express Ho thundered across the meadows at from 40 to 50 miles an hour and came in sight of tlie excursion train just as ho latter pulled ahead in tho direction the crossing Ho doubtless was unable to distinguish upon which traek the special was running IHh only source of information as to what ho should do wus tlie light in the tower Greiner holding the throttle on tho other engine knew one thing sure that both trains must go over the intersection He got the white light to go over first so the living say and tried to make the goal Ho failed andoueof the most harrowing railroad collisions of the times passed into history Striking the excursion train obliquely as It did Just us the engine und first car had cleared the Reuding fiyer the locomotive clashed through and crumbled up the retnaiiiing five ears and having performed its horrible work toppled over mid feet in the marsh piiitMihiriil 4 Aug The official report to the lVniis Ivania railroad otficluU states that 47 pimHtngers were killed The number reported lujured is 44 All the killed were in the Pennsylvania Railroad The Investigation so fur made shows that the truin had the right of way the red signal Ixdtig turned against the Reading train and it remains Iu that position ot the present time Ohio Htate University by IL IL Herrick Well Ington There is more than one business side of cheese making dependent upon point of view from which you are looking One side might be a consideration of tho system or systems under which the cheese business is conducted iu this 'state In the Wellington cheese district the factories are nearly all owned or controlled by a few firms and they rule the dairymen with an iron hand The duirymen contracts to deliver his milk to the factory twice per day during the season that is from April 1 to December 1 The fuctory operator contracts to make merchantable article of cheese to sell tho same at tho best market price obtainable as fast it is fit for market to divide the net proceeds among the patrons in proportion to the amount of milk furnished the factory man to receive acoiumission of one and three-fourths cents per ponnd for the manufacture and selling of the cheese and four cents per pound for butter Under this Hystcm of management the dairyman munt wait at least sixty days and frequently very much longer before he knows what he is to receive for his milk In tho eastern section of the state two systems of operation have Wen in vogue The most common practice is for tho fuctory ojHsrator to buy tho milk didivered at the factory the price tsdng bused on the New York quotations for cheese and is fixed fora period of ten or fifteen days In ad ivnncc usually tho 1st aud l'th of each I month This is very satisfactory to I most of the duirymen as they know jnsl wlmt they are to receive for their milk und do not have to wait an indefinite lime for their money The other system to which reference was made is cooeratlve The dairymen own the factory and hire the cheese maker or in some cases the clos-se maker owns the fuelory and contract with the dairymen to manufacture the cheese anti deliver to them nady for market at a certain price per KM pound usually from ninety cents lo olio dollar In either case the patron of the fa lory appoint a sales committee which tlisjMtseN of the cheese buyers or hlper at stated Interval ThU committee also divide the money among the pntnms ou the hasi of the milk uppiied This arrangement not at-way satisfactory a the committee not infrequently have but a moderate business training and are taken advantage of by the buyer Miss Ini Garda Wilhelm thedaugh ter of Rev Wilhelm of
