We value her highly, thank her sincerely, and pay her handsomely. But she wants more.

She wants to be friends. Miss Manners, I do not want to be her friend, any more than I would want to be friends with the pediatrician, the auto mechanic, the accountant or the mail carrier. I do not wish to appear heartless or rude, but I expect such people to solve their own problems and to look for companionship elsewhere. How does one politely convey such a message without coming across as meanspirited? GENTLE READER Miss Manners abhors the practice of commercial "friendliness," by which the manners of social intimacy are applied in what ought to be cordial business relationships. Of necessity, your cleaning woman is privy to many of your private habits and cannot be treated as formally as someone with whom transactions are transient, brief and public. That is not to say that you must be friends with her; merely that you must treat her with special consideration.

And in this case, since her expectation is that you should share confidences, that involves making the distance between you seem unconnected with either her personality or her position. Even if you are always home when she is there, surely you are not lounging around looking bored. Whatever it is you have to do, you must do with some bustle and the kindly admonition: "I'm sorry I've got to get this done. I just don't have time to chat." DEAR MISS MANNERS When people write to tell me that they enjoyed being a guest in my home, I always respond by writing to say how much I enjoyed having them. To me, it's the thoughtful thing to do.

However, when the shoe is on the other foot, it's a different story. When I have been a guest in someone's home and I write my swer. I always they rethanks, I never receive, any anceived my letter. I don't expect to strike up a long-term correspondence, just a "thank you -enjoyed that? having you." What's wrong Am I expecting too much? Is it such a faux pas to do the thoughtful thing? GENTLE READER Miss Manners doesn't do too much business in the above-and-beyond thank-you realm. No, there is nothing wrong with writing charming little notes to house guests. It's an extra little practice that you have invented, and Miss Manners is happy to congratulate you on doing it.

But why couldn't you leave it at that, accepting Miss Manners' commendation as well as the satisfaction in which you are basking? There is something wrong in expecting your hosts to adhere to your habit. It is not standard practice, and you have no right to be disgruntled at its absence in others. Feeling incorrect?
