To make it apparent to thousands, who think themselves ill, that they are not afflicted with any disease, but that the system simply needs cleans inr, is to bring comfort home to their hearts, as a costive condition is easily cured by using Syrup of Figs. Man ufactured by the California Fig Syrup Company only, and sold by all drug gists. "Ou, of course we won't waste any more time in prognostications," said a sidewalk orator at Leis' corner this morning: "Tbe election is all over and the result is settled, but it isn't ab solutely necessary to go to work yet awhile. There is what you newspa per men call the aftermath, you know, and we have to understand thorough ly how it was done. Of course tbe mornings are a bit chilly for street talks, but there are stoves in places that are handy to the streets and we can sit around them and discuss this matter with more comfort than we could provious to the election Why, my dear man, you don't know half the tricks that a fellow ean resort to, nor half the excuses he can find to refrain from gettitg a job.

It was too hot to work last summer and when tbe weather got about right, then the election came on, and somebody you know, has to stand around and work up enthusiasm for the populist ticket Now, you can see for yourself that it is eetting too cold to work out of A fond First ward mother had been teaching her little three-year old daughter to pray properly. She first taught the child a simple prayer then explained its purpose and in structed that she could pray for the welfare of any one in whom she felt an interest. The otuer evening tue child was heard offering up the fol lowing: "Oh, Lord, bless papa an' mamma, an' gran'ma an' Lord take are of yourself an' don't get b'cause I don't know what I'd do with out you." The Lecompton Sun has just issued from its job department the report of the last conference of the United Brethern conference which met in that city recently. The report con tains over fifty pages and is one that the members of the conference will look upon with pride It is neatly printed and typographically a beauty. Charles Johnson who was elected state senator last Tuesday by the re publicans of this ccunty was appoint ed receiver of tbe Santa Fe in Kansas vesterday.

There will not be much use to apply to him for jobs on the section as the chances are he will not get to operate road. To make room for a change in our future business, we will sell all goods, fine millinery and furnishing, at 33U per cent, less than the regular marked prices, regardless of cost. There is a great deal of interest snown in the league fot-ball game that will take place tomorrow at Mc-Cook field between the Kansas and Nebraska University elevens. The teams are both strong, and while Kan sas has suffered two defeats recently it has not been due to any weakness of the team, and the eleven will be in better shape than ever before the bmt with Nebraska team has been winning almost every gmc played this year, and will come to this city this afternoon confident of success.

The Kansas team will play about as it has in recent game with Sanderson, Hamill, Mosse, Walker, Fitzpat-rick, Foster and Whitney ia the line and Kennedy, Baine, Voigts, Hester back of the line Crooks, Simpson and other strong piayers will be kept in readiness to plav at any moment. The men in the line of the Nebraska team will be Jones, Dungan, Kellar, Bobbins, Turner, Purse and Wiggins with Thorpe, Cook. Shedd and Pack nrd behind the line. The game wi 1 be called at 3 o'clock and the referee and umpire will be Fred. Cornell, of Lincoln, Neb, and Lieutenant Smith, of Baldwin.

NOW FOR BUSINESS. The Election Is Over. Lawrence has nothing to do row ex cept to get down to business and sell goods. There should be no more party dis tention, no more haggling over hairs, but a united and determined effort to do business. We have differed greatly local matters ttw same as in national af fairs but that is of the past, wha is wanted now is a united effort for oui own interests.

This brings us to the point Law. rence is the seat of a great univer sity, one of the greatest in the west We ask and receive large appropria tions from the state. It is not right that members of the legislature from this county should be charged with the guardianship of this sshool, but they are, and we must make the most of it. We must assist wherever we can do so. It is nonsen sical to keep up the warfare that has been carried on all these months.

ine world nas fought as hard as most of the republicans. It has said many bitter things. Without taking back anything but bowing to the in evitable in a patriotic spirit we mnst all unite to look after our great insti tution of learning. The populists have our interests in their hands and it is not going to make them any jre friendly to hear themselves belabored and villified. It is not necessary to sacrifice any prin ciple, it is not necessary to tell them they are the salt of the earth but it is not necessary on the other hand to be continually reminding them that they are the most degraded of mortals and stand for all that is bad.

Lawrence of ail places cannot afford that kind of talk. The Would trusts that here after there may be sense used in the discharge of bile. If a man is dissatisfied with the result in Kansas we will all ho our breath while he moves oat but if he is going to remain with us we want him to unite te advance the work we have on hand loy ally. It has all passed beyond the political state and has come to be plainly a matter of business. The -World trusts that no more republicans will so far forget themselves again as to be calling ugly names, and inviting retaliation.

Tbe Official Count. The county commissioners met this morning and began the canvass of the vote cast at the last election. At the time of going to press they have only finished four wards and it will be eight toworrow before the final count is in The result is not being chang ed from the report as tabulated bv the republicans. The man who sold windmills adjusted his chair at a new angle, crossed his feet on the railing of the balcony, locked his hands over the top of his head, and began: "Curious fellows, those way back farmers are; droll chaps to deal with, too; cute and sharp at a bargain. The Judgeship. The question of who was elected judge of the fourth judicial district is still agitating the politicians although Mr Rtggs claims to be safely out of the woods. Mr. Smart lost eight votes in the third ward by the official count but that can be changed if it is neces sary to change the result. Mr.

Riggs received information from Anderson and Franklin counties to the effect that he had received 495 majority in thoe two counties. The official count is not expected to change this much. The entire disposition ot the question depends upon the count as made by the commissioners to-day and to-morrow. Some of the pre cincts are only estimated so that the exact figures cannot be obtained but on the face of the reports Mr. Riggs has a few votes the majority.

FACTS ABOU "THERMOMETERS JSsasltire Insti-nraent Which Register Heat from ths Moon. To tell whether a thermometer ac- Mirately does Its work, Invert tne Instrument, says the New York World. If the mercury does not fall to the end or if it breaks into several smau columns the thermometer contains air and is inaccurate. If perfectly made the slender thread should fill the tube or break off at the bulb and fall to the other end of the tube. There is another interesting fact about thermometers.

Nine persons out of ten think the mercurial column round, but that is not tbe case. The thread of mercury in thermometers Is flat. If it were round the column could hardly be seen, for the opening of tbe tube Is as fine as the finest thread. Some eight of ten yess ago a Boston manufacturer introduced a scheme of coating the back of the tuhe with white sizing. That makes the column of mercury stand out clear and distinct.

Thermometers are cheaper and bet ter than ever before, "iou can now buy heat marker for 25 cents but a first- class Instrument will cost you A cheap instrument is like a cheap watch it is unreliable. The reason for this is that a perfect thermometer has a scale of its own. A cheap thermometer is made on guess work. Hence you see a ainerence oi iwo, mree or htb degrees between thermometers in the same locality on the same day. The most sensitive heat marker 1 the Crookes.
