Radio Station KFYO To Star! FM Schedule Sunday Morning Frequency modulation radio receivers in the immediate Lufabock area will pet their first workout Sundav when radio station KFYO's FM transmitter goes on the air. Radio listeners since the war have heard and read a great deal about frequency modulation, and many in this area found that their new" postwar sets came equipped with an FM band, but. because there were no FM stations on the South Plains, they were unable to give the latest wrinkle in radio a try-out. Radio Differ Sunday mornlnR, beginning 7 a. Micilo owners cnn tune in their FM sets on Bfl.5 megacycles, or if Ihc-ir sets have a different type dinl.

can tune to band number 258 and pick up the first frequency modulation broadcast from KFYO. Heretofore the Lubbock station had broadcast only on an AM frequency of 1340 beginning Sunday the station will broadcast identical programs over the two bands, AM and FM, from the Plains Radio Broadcasting studios 'on Avenue J. The construction of the newFM transmitter began January 2 under the direction of S. Blcdsoc, chief engineer for the broadcasting firm. The RCA Unit was installed and then a 45-foot special antenna was erected on top of the Lubbock National building in downtown Lubbock.

The tip of the antenna is 135 feet above the city's streets. Started Hen Bledsoe beigan test broadcasts about 10 days ago with programs piped to the FM transmitter by telephone line from KFYQ's main studios. The programs were corn' plete except for call letters, which, because the transmitter was on test, were omitted. Bledsoe is one of the radio industry's oldest and top engineers. He was a radio instructor in the American Air covps during 'World War I.

He was founder and owner of station KTSM in El Paso. He also served for some time with General Elortric company as engineer and sales representative. Son of the late State Senator H. Bledsoe of Lubbock the chief engineer joined the Plains Radio Broadcasting company in April, 3936 and has remained with the companv since that time. Near Center Of Dial KFYO's FM frequency lies almost at the center of the FM band.

The present 'band is from 88 to 108 Megacycles, or from 200 to 300 on the FM band numbered dial. i Bledsoe explained that because of the extra high frequency of the frequency modulation broad- cast there was no interference from electrical and because of its compartively short range there would be no interference from nearby FM stations. Electrical storms and static electricity generated by dust storms cause no distortion or interference of FM reception, he pointed out. Have Seti Checked "If there is apparent static or interference in reception of an. FM program, the set owner should have his radio checked for the trouble probably lies in set and not in transmission," Bledsoe pointed put.

"Some FM sets which have not been used for a long time, or which have not been used on the FM band may require some i adjustment," he pointed out. "The 135 foot antenna should provide all frequency modulation sets within a 35 or 40 mile radius of Lubbock with clear reception. However, there may be some 'shadow' spots the territory about which we do not know. May Find Shadow Spoil "Since frequency modulation broadrartinc covers only a 'line of sight' area, corresponding roughly to the horizon line seen from the top of the antenna, it is possible that some FM receivers within the radius of the broadcast will not operate because of a hill or other land vise between. the set and the broadcast antenna," the chief engineer explained.

FM receivers have an anlenna built into the.cabinet that will operate efficiently within our range, but special FM receiving antennas may be required for good reception near the outer edge of our broadcast area," he pointed oul. "Wo don't claim any 'miracle' for FM. is a new development in radio, and many pconle have been led to believe it is the solution to all their radio reception problems, but this is not entirely the case. Frequency rnodulation does give greater fidelity- of reproduction on the larger and better constructed sets, and it will give slatic-frcc reception, but it is not a miracle development," Bledsoe declared. KFYO-AM broadcasts are made from 6 a.

m. to midnight on week days and from 7 m. until 11 p. m. on Sundays.

FM programs will be the same as those on AM, both originating in the central studio, but the frequency modula- tion schedule will begin at 6 a. m. I on week days and close at 11 p. m. of week days, begin at 7 a.

m. and close at 10 p. m. on Sundays. KFYO will change its call letters Sunday to "KFYO AM' and FM" as the new transmitter goes fnto.j operation.
