'United States is just another part of Louisiana attracting tourists in their trek That is the estate of A McIlhenny of Avery island With more than 6700 species of plants on the grounds of the 200 acres surrounding the home the site is an outstanding garden spot In all of Louisiana's verdancy There are virtually no varieties of flowers shrubs or trees known to the average layman which are not represented in the collection and hundreds to note of which only the botanist and traveled naturalist have ever heard or seen One of the most interesting sections of this huge garden is devoted to 64 varieties of bamboo Some of this reed-like growth attains an average height of 65 feet in approximately six weeks Averaging 10 feet of growth per week the plant shows its natural diameter as soon as it is above the ground However the majority of the species of bamboo is not considered "ripe" until it Is three years nf age Neither does it show further height after its first rapid upward sprout But before it is hardened and seasoned it must remain in the ground until it is ready for its original purpose and use Tropical and semi-tropical shrubs and flowers have special recognition in these gardens Separate sections are devoted to their developments A sunken garden with a huge lily pool in its depths is a bower of these distintive foliages and one of the most charming spots in all of the wealth of blooms Favored areas are landscaped in diversified manners For example there is a horseshoe formation of azaleas and japonicas flanking a mirror lake A border of huge blue hydrangeas encloses the spot and when this riot of color is in full bloom is one of the most gorgeous arrays of pastels to be found In any flower show There are 402 varieties of japonicas and SO of azaleas in the collection Naturally they boast of all hues and sizes Along with the other blossoms Indigenous to Louisiana they comprise an interesting part of the garden Iris of all shades and grades have prominent positions A border of these delicate flowers is an unusual treat for the one delighting in the beautiful bounties of the soil Some of these bloms resemble orchids in their variety Along with all of this gorgeous splendor of blossom and growth are other attributes to add to it all In the background is "Bird City" where thousands of herons nest These aigrettes a charming neighbors for the multitude of flora In this beauty bower Then too there are swans and ducks and alligators and even a young robust teddy bear All of which make of Avery one of Louisiana's most distinctive spots HUDSON DIES HERE EARLY TODAY FUNERAL ON SUNDAY NEW ORLEANS Aug base period for figuring the value of crops from farm land to be appraised for a loan by the Federal Land bank of New Orleans has been changed from the period 1905- 1914 to August 1909-July 1914 In estimating the earning power of a farm to be mortgaged officials state the average crop prices for the new base period must be applied to the latest 10-year average production record after taking into consideration any economic changes which may have affected the value of farm lands in the community This ruling is in line with farm credt administration's policy of using normal values in arrivng at the security values of farma offered by applicants for farm lands Inasmuch as a land bank loan or a commissioner's loan is made for a long term of years it is necessary that the normal agricultural value be considered in appraising the land for such loans This is the policy used in Alabama Louisiana and Mississippi by government appraisers who point out that the selling price of farms may vary considerably even over Eo short a period as 10 years In the open market at any given time however a farm may be worth more or may be worth less than the normal agricultural value Miss Mamie Turner clerk of the City council has returned from her vacation spent on the Island of Powhatan Miss Turner and her friend Miss Winifred Pirkle
