Standard-Speaker, Monday, May 16, 1994 Obituaries Ernest S. Sell Ernest S. Sell, 89, of 608 Grant Hazleton, died at his residence Sunday morning following a lengthy illness. Born in Hazleton, March 3, 1905, he was a son of the late George and Pauline (Kuehn) Sell and spent his entire life in Hazleton. He was a graduate of Hazleton High School and received a master's degree in industrial arts education from Penn State University.

He began his teaching career in 1952 when he taught for three years at the Tamaqua School District. From 1956 to 1958 he served as an instructor at the GI Vocational School in Hazleton. During the same two years he was an industrial arts instructor at the former D.A. Harman Junior High School. From 1959 until his retirement in 1970 he taught industrial arts in the former H.F.

Grebey School. He was a member of Grace Reformed United Church of Christ, Hazleton, and the German Social Club of Nuremberg. He was an avid sportsman and at one time belonged to the local Game Betterment Association; the Little Schuylkill Conservation Club; and the Tomhicken Hunting Club. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by brothers, Carl and Bert; and a sister, Marie Montague. Surviving are children, David Walter Roy, Joan P.

and Jane R. Sell, all of Hazleton; two grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; brothers, Walter, Paul and William, all of Hazleton; sisters, Alma Mulligan, New Jersey; and Hilda Wills, Jensen Beach, and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 10 a.m. 1 from the Krapf Hughes Funeral Home, 426 W. Broad Hazleton.

The Rev. J. David Hengen, pastor of Grace Reformed United Church, Hazleton, will conduct the services. Interment will follow in the Mt. Laurel Memorial Park.

Friends may call at the funeral home today from 7 to 9 p.m. Dr. Joachim Gfoeller Dr. Joachim Gfoeller, of 1337 Buckland Fremont, Ohio, died Saturday at his home. Born Feb.

3, 1921, he was a son of the late Kajetan and Eva (Riedman) Gfoeller and in 1959 he became an American citizen. He graduated from Innsbruck University Medical School in 1951. He came to Cleveland, Ohio, in 1953 and interned at Lakewood Hospital in 1953 and 1954. He was a resident radiologist at Cleveland City Hospital and Highland View Hospital; and a Catholic medical missionary. He served as radiologist at Fremont Memorial Hospital and Good Samaritan Hospital, retiring in 1988 as chief of radiology.

He was a member of St. Joseph's Church, Fremont, the Sand Co. Medical Society; Ohio State Medical Association; American Medical Association; Ohio Radiological Society; American College of Radiology; and a diplomate of American Board of Radiology. Surviving are his wife, the former Shirley Antonelli; sons, Joachim Gfoeller New York City; Michael Gfoeller, Brussels, Belgium; and John Gfoeller, Ada, Ohio; daughters, Margret Tomassini, Bastia Umbra, Italy; Mary Engman, Colorado Springs, and Monica Johansen, Pittsboro, N.C.; brother, Kajetan Gfoeller, sisters, Eva Hangl and Berta Wimmer, and half-brother, Joseph Thaler, all of Austria; and six grandsons. The funeral will be held Wednesday from the Keller Koch Funeral Home, Fremont, with services in St.

Joseph's Church at 10:30 a.m. Interment will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery. The rosary will be recited Tuesday at 8:45 p.m. Memorials may be made to the Birchard Library or St.

Prior to retiring she was employed at David Lee Sportswear of West Hazleton as a sewing machine operator. She was a member of Transfiguration Roman Catholic Church, West Hazleton, and the International Ladies Garment Workers Union of Hazleton. Preceding her in death in addition to her parents were her husband, Joseph on Jan. 7, 1977; sisters, Veronica Reitmyer and Mary Lorince; and a brother, John Rostocki. Surviving are children, Mrs.

Michael (Marie) Krutsick, Lansford; Joseph, West Hazleton; Mrs. George (Patricia) Smar, Schwenksville, Montgomery County; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; sister, Rose Domin, West Hazleton; and several nieces and nephews. The funeral will be held Wednesday at 9 a.m. from the Hilary J. Bonin Funeral Home, 99 W.

Green West Hazleton. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. in Transfiguration R.C. Church at 9:30 a.m.. followed by interment in the parish cemetery.

Friends may call Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. A Christian wake service will be held Tuesday evening. Bessie B. Moyer Bessie B. Moyer, 92, of 405 Broad Nescopeck, died Sunday morning at the Berwick Retirement Village, where she was a guest since last Wednesday.

Born in Dorrance Township July 27, 1901, she was a daughter of the late Uriah and Hannah (Kropf) Slusser and lived in Nescopeck 30 years and prior to that in Hazleton for 17 years. She was a member of the Albright United Methodist Church, Nescopeck. Preceding her in death were her husband, Clay on Feb. 19, 1987; infant daughter, Lois Jean Moyer; four sisters and six brothers. She was the last surviving member of her family.

Surviving are a daughter, Thelma A. Hontz, with whom she resided; two granddaughters; and three great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at 1 the Heller Funeral Home, Nescopeck. The Rev.

Dr. P. Dale Neufer, her pastor, and Rev. Mark L. Russell, pastor of St.

Mark's Lutheran Church, Nescopeck, will officiate. Interment will be in St. James Lutheran Cemetery, Hobbie. Friends may call Wednesday from 101 to 11 a.m. Contributions may be made to the Memorial Fund of her church.

Richard Hawk Richard Hawk, 64, of Nuremberg, died at his home Sunday evening. Born in Kittanning, Armstrong County, he was a son of the late Claude and Mary (Shaffer) Hawk. He was of the Lutheran faith. A Marine Corps veteran of the Korean War, he was wounded in action and received the Purple Heart. Before retirement, he worked at Fairless Hills Steel Co.

for 37 years. He was preceded in death by a brother, Donald, in 1984. Surviving are his wife, the former Jean Hasler; a daughter, Mrs. Randy (Evelyn) Hartz, Mahanoy Plane; three brothers, Claude Hawk, Rimersburg, Clarion County; James Hawk, Leechburg, and Robert Hawk, East Brady, Clarion County; a sister, Helene Martelle Pryor, New Orleans, two grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. The funeral will be held Thursday at 11 a.m.

He was a member of Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Allentown. He was the director of music at Notre Dame High School, Easton, for 21 years, retiring in 1978. He was the first director at the school and also composed their alma mater. Before that, he was in the Army military band, West Point, N.Y., for 21 years and was a veteran of World War II.

He studied violin at the Juilliard School of Music, New York City, and saxophone with Carl Prager of the National Broadcasting Co. Yapsuga played with the Lehighton Zion Association foar the past three years, the Allentown Symphony, 1980-81, and the Matt Gillespie Orchestra for 12 years in the 1960s and 70s. Surviving are his wife of 52 years, the former Dorothy M. Stroinski; sons, Joseph J. Bethlehem, and Dr.

Robert Whitehall; brothers, Leo, McAdoo; and Edward, Northampton; sisters, Helen Burick, Mountaintop; Emily Schaal; Mrs. Henry (Dorothy) Burick; and Mrs. Albert (Irene) Minetola, all of Allentown; six grandchildren; and one great-grandson. Funeral services will be held today at 9:30 a.m. from the Weber Funeral Home, 502 Ridge Allentown, with a Mass at 10 a.m.

in the John Petrovich John Petrovich, 66, of Weston, died Sunday at 8 p.m. at his home after being in ill health for the past year and a half. Born in Sugarloaf, Dec. 23, 1927, he was a son of the late Anthony and Mary (Shoblock) Petrovich and spent the past 24 years in Weston previously living in Sugarloaf. He was a retired miner and machine operator.

He was a member of Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church, Weston; an Army veteran of World War II; member of American Legion Post 699 of Nuremberg; Shenandoah Fish and Game Club; Black Creek Sportsmen's Club; and the National Rifle Association. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, the former Dorothy Marignoni, in 1991; sister, Lorraine Ivory; and brother, Henry. Surviving are daughters, Diane Petrovich and Mrs. William (Cynthia) Zamonas, both of Weston; two grandchildren; brothers, Edward, Grand Rapids, Walter and Theodore, both of Sugarloaf; and a sister, Lucille Schroeder, Grand Rapids, Mich. The funeral will be held Wednesday at 9:30 a.m.

Vermillion, 81, of 29 E. Ludlow Summit Hill, died Sunday at her home. Born in Summit Hill, she was the daughter of the late John and Annie (Loftus) McNelis. From 1946 to 1979, she was a dental hygienist in the Summit Hill office of her husband, Dr. Albert Vermillion.

She was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Summit Hill. Her husband died in 1985. Surviving are stepsons, attorney Edward, Lehighton; Drs. Louis and Kenneth, both of Summit Hill; Joseph, Drums; and six step grandchildren.

Services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. from the Thomas J. Parambo Funeral Home, 54 W. Fell Summit Hill. A Mass will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m.

Born in Freeland, he was the son of the late Michael and Mary (Bysura) Hollick and had resided in the Freeland area his entire life.

During World War II, he served in the Army. Until retirement, he was a tool and die maker for Barrett-Haentjens Hazleton. He was a member of St. Mary's Byzantine Catholic Church, Freeland; the church's choir, the Freeland Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5010; Freeland American Legion Post 473; Freeland Elks Lodge 1145; Fearnots Volunteer Fire Co. of Foster Township; Freeland Cooties; Jeddo Stars A.A.; Freeland Quarterback Club, and the Freeland Citizens' Progressive Association.

He was also the Freeland representative on the Hazleton Area School Board from 1978 to 1987. His brother, David, preceded him in death. Surviving are his wife, the former Helen Evans; a son, John Freeland; daughters, Mrs. Joseph (Denise) Yaniga, Drums; Mrs. Daniel (Judith) Kochie, Sugarloaf; and Mrs.

Clyde (Susan) Warner Freeland; brothers, John and Elmer, both of Freeland; Edward, Windsor, sisters, Mrs. Thomas (Mary) O'Brien, Allentown; and Mrs. John (Anna) Paulshock, Freeland; six grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 9 a.m. from the McHugh-Wilczek Funeral Home, 249 Centre Freeland.

"Shig" Shuliga, 78, of 534 N. Laurel Hazleton, died suddenly Saturday night. Born in Beaver Meadows, he was the son of the late Joseph and Susan (Novak) Shuliga. He was a member of Ss. Peter Paul Slovak Lutheran Church.

During World War II, he served in the Air Force. Prior to retiring, he was employed by Consolidated Cigar. Surviving are his wife, the former Lorraine Goach; children, Loren, Hamburg, Berks County; Mrs. Anthony (Holly) Ciotola, Hazleton; Mrs. Dennis (Ivy) Wilcko, Drums; Mrs.

Robert (Autumn) Sagan, Hazleton; Daryl, at home; and Kyle, Hazleton; sisters, Mary Woodring, Hazleton; Mrs. Richard (Ann) Schwartz, Hershey; Suzanne Kleinlein, Columbus, Ohio; and Helen, Jenkintown, Montgomery County; brothers, Joseph and Dick, both of Hazleton; seven grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Kelshaw Evelyn H. Kelshaw, 68, of 228 Third Weatherly, died Saturday evening at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.

Born in Weatherly May 22, 1925, she was a daughter of the late Walter F. and Prudence (Samler) Hess. She was a member of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Weatherly, and served as church organist and director of the Junior and Senior choirs. She was also a member of the Senior Citizens Friendship Club of Weatherly. Prior to retirement she was employed as a clerk-typist in the Weatherly Borough offices, and was also a former employee of the Weatherly branch of the Hazleton National Bank.

Preceding her in death in addition to her parents was, her husband, Ronald C. Kelshaw, in April 1975. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Ron (Barbara) Sandt, Weatherly; son, Ronald H. Kelshaw, Weatherly; a and two granddaughters.

The funeral will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. from the Philip J. Jeffries Funeral Home, Weatherly. The Rev. Robert von Frisch will officiate.

Payton, 80, of White Haven, died Sunday at Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center, Plains Township. Born in Easton, he was a son of the late Thomas and Cora (Cox) Payton and lived in the White Haven area most of his life. Preceding him in death were brothers, Charles, William and Richard; and a sister, Margaret Anthony. Payton retired in 1982 from Tobyhanna Army Depot, and I he was formerly employed by Wilmot Engineering Co. He was an Army veteran of World War II; a life member of White Haven Fire member of American Legion Post 592; and a social member of Kidder Township Fire Co.

Surviving is a brother, Nathan, Jeddo. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. from the Joseph E. Lehman Funeral Home, 403 Berwick White Haven, where the Rev. Michele Kaufman, pastor of St.

Koehler, 86, of Montoursville, R.R. 4 died April 8 in Leader Nursing Home, Montoursville. Born in Weatherly, Sept. 20, 1907, she was the daughter of the late Harry and Mame (Snyder) Daugherty. Her husband, George died Jan.

28, 1972. Surviving are a son, William Montoursville; a sister, Alice Koch, Weatherly; and one grandchild. Interment was in Twin Hills Memorial Park, Muncy. Andrew Denar, Jr. Andrew "Rinny" Denar, of 714 Winters West Hazleton, died Saturday morning at the Hahnemann Hospital, Philadelphia.

Born in West Hazleton, he was a son of the late Andrew and Anna (Kubeck) Denar and resided in that community his entire life. He was employed by Columbia Footwear Surviving are a daughter, Deanna, Wilkes-Barre; and a brother, Thomas West Hazleton. The funeral will be held at the convenience of the family from the John J. Pusti Funeral Home, 480 W. Broad Hazleton.

Matteo, of rear 621 N. Wyoming died Sunday morning at the Hershey Medical Center. She was born in Hazleton, daughter of the late Stanley and Marjorie (Krapf) Barcasky. She was a member of Most Precious Blood Roman Catholic Church. Before retiring, she was employed at Carmella Dress.

Preceding her in death were a brother, Robert, and sisters, Betty Jane Leib and Martha Ruth Barcasky. Surviving are her husband, Anthony daughters, Mrs. Ernest (Sharon) Haeussler, Hazleton; Mrs. Rick (Marcy) Marchetti, Hazleton; sister, Mrs. Charles (June) Kemp, Barrington, Rhode Island; one grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.

Demsko, of 647 Harvey West Hazleton, who died Tuesday at the Hazleton-St. Joseph Medical Center, was held Saturday from the John J. Pusti Funeral Home.

Monsignor Stephen P. Shymansky gave the blessing at the funeral home, celebrated the Divine Liturgy in St. Michael's Ukrainian Catholic Church, and gave the final blessing in Calvary Cemetery, Drums. Pallbearers were Eric Hatfield, Mark Demsko, grandsons; Michael Demsko, nephew; James and John Eveland, Barry Gurgal and Thomas Moro. Military rites were accorded by the American Legion Post 76, with commander Tom Segilia, in charge.

The firing squad consisted of John Turk, Bob Evans, Joe Garzio and John Diehl. Bugler was Red Evans. The funeral of George T. Deeb 110 S. Pine Hazleton, who died Wednesday at Hazleton General Hospital, was held Saturday from the Boyle Funeral Home.

Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated in Holy Rosary Church by the Rev. Neil Gugliemelli. The Rev. Vincent Maroun, cousin of the deceased, was concelebrant. Father Gugliemelli gave the blessing in St.
