The ill-fated liner was the pride of the White Star Line and officials, when the first wireless messages of the collision arrived, declared the ship was unsinkable. They pointed to the fact that the Titanic was equipped with 15 water-tight bulkheads, not enough of which could be smashed at one time to make It possible to sink her.
