MAX, HEAD WAITER AT MOUQUIN'S, DEAD Max, for many years head waiter and steward of old Mouquin's Restaurant in Manhattan, died yesterday of pneumonia at his home, 215 Sterling after a brief illness. Max Bernheim was his full name and he achieved fame by being the reputed inventor of the oyster cocktail. According to the story, a couple of newspapermen entered the restaurant one night exhausted from overwork and asked for a pick-me-up.

"Give us something new," they demanded. Invented Oyster Cocktail. That was the inspiration of Max's dashed masterpiece a little tobasco into its juice, for he took an oyster, drowned the whole in there" of his invention--and was the own "oyster cocktail." D. Republican Club. Middagh st. is one of the narrowest in the boro and is subject to one-way traffic regulation. Miss Wren contends that there is no reason why the fire house could not be built one block away on Liberty a much wider thoroughfare.

MRS. MARY KIERAN O' of 383 Baltic st. died yesterday of pneumonia at her home. She was a member of Our Lady Mercy R. C.

Church, where a 'of solemn requiem mass will be offered Saturday morning at 10 o'clock. Mrs. Maroney born in the 1st Ward, Manhattan, 44 years ago, the daughter of the late Maurice and Mary Curran Kieran. She is survived by her husband, Andrew Maroney; three sons and three daughters, a grandson and two sisters. Interment will be in Holy Cross Cemetery.

Steps have been taken Boro President Byrne to prevent the recurrence of such an incident as the drowning on Tuesday of Reuben Schreiber, 12, of 103 Amboy in a pond at Clarkson and Remsen aves. Playing on a raft with two schoolmates, Reuben fell into the water.

Boro President Byrne has ruled that pits in which water collects must be surrounded by a fence and that when the water reaches a depth of 10 feet the site must be guarded constantly by a watchman. In accordance with his ruling, the President ordered the Brooklyn Ash Company, owner Boro of the property on which the boy was drowned. to build a strong fence around the pond and to have a watchman on duty when necessary. The company, it was said. had planned to fill the pond with ashes, but Mr.

Byrne ordered that clean, hard soil be used instead. HOSPITAL DAY MAY 12. Second Floor Burglars Rob Ex-Mate Of Mrs. Schoellkopf Burglars broke into the apartment occupied by Peter Gaudette and Frank B. Carman at 270 W. 73d Manhattan, last night and stole jewelry valued at about $5,000 as well as a quantity of clothing. The burglary was discovered when Gaudette returned home and found the door had been forced open.

The jewelry is the property of Carman, who is in Providence, R. on business. Carman, according to Gaudette, received considerably publicity seven years ago after Mrs. C. Schoellkopf, wife of Buffalo manufacturer, was robbed of $500,000 in jewels at a New Year's Eve party at which Carman was host.

Carman later married the woman, according Gaudette, but the marriage ended in divorce. DR. J. B. KOPF, SURGEON, DIES OF PNEUMONIA Dr.

J. Benjamin Kopf, a wellknown surgeon, died yesterday at his home, 863 Carroll of pneumonia. He was taken ill last Friday. Dr. Kopf was graduated from New York University in 1895 and had practiced in this boro for many years.
