THE SALMOH RIVER ROAD. Commissioners Receive the Work and Pay the Contractor. 0 GOVERNOR HURT INSPECTS THE ROAD Pronounced The Best Mountain Road In the Monument to the Legislature. Commissioners James Witt ami W. H.

Cas ad returned Saturday, from Salmon river, where witli R. E. Lockwood they liave completed their work of superintending the construction of the slate wagon road. Tlie contractors were paid oil and everything is finished except a few unimportant improvements which the commissioners have arranged to have done by local parties Governor Hunt and Civil Engineer H. E.

Abry of the P. I. spent Wednesday and Thursday with the commissioners looking over the road, and expressed themselves as well pleased with the work and complimented the commissioners upon the judicious manner in which the money had been expended. Governor Hunt had intended to come on to this city, but urgent business called him back to Boise. However, he partially promised to return and spend a portion of the street fair with us.

The Salmon river state wagou road is pronounced the best mountain road in the state, and will not. only be of great benefit- to a great number of people, but will stand as a monument to the enterprise and honesty of the legislature which appropriated money for its construction, the governor who appointed the commissioners, and the men who superintended the work. 8 0 0 1 STAR ROUTE CONTRACTS. Bide Will bn Received Until December 3rd The postmaster general at Wash ington has issued an advertisement inviting proposals for carrying the U. 8.

A number of new rulings have been made which will no doubt materially improve, the service, besides putting a stop to the wholesale speculation which has heretofore been carried on in this branch of government work. Special attention is called to the law prohibiting the sub-letting of contracts, and contractors will be expected to reside on or contiguous to the route and give personal supervision to the of the service. They will also he required to make schedule time. In addition to carrying the mails to the various post offices the carrier on each route (except when otherwise specifically stated) will be.

uLo, required to deliver mail into all boxes and hang small bags or satchels containing mail on cranes or posts that may bo erected along the rqute, These requirements will without a doubt give the public better service but they will, also, incre the cost of carrying the mail aud parties who have heretofore taken contracts at ruinously low prices will either have to quit the business or expect their bondsrqen to make good deficiencies The government Is determined to have good service aud is willing to pay for it.
