Was it the gangster who suddenly remorseful and remembering his clean past committed suicide Or was this but a coincidence complicating the mystery Around that question revolves the conflicts and passions the tensely dramatic situations of "State street Sadie" the Vitaphone crook mystery melodrama scheduled to open at the Majestic Theatre Saturday for a five days' engagement Conrad Nagel a Vitaphone fay-mite in Shreveport and Myrna Loy and William Russell whose voices are new to this city top the impressive cast An excellent bill of Vita-phone vaudeville is also on the program "The The sixth -annual one-day convention of the United Christian Missionary society for this district will be held Oct 25 at the Kingshighway Christian church of this city These one-day gatherings constitute the greatest convention enterprise of the Disciples of Christ In point of attendance and last year broke all previous records with a total attendance of 54039 Because of the great popularity of these conventions it was found necessary to hold 201 of them this year covering all sections of the United States and parts of Canada The general theme of the conventions is "Sharing with Christ" The morning session will open at 10 o'clock with a service leading to high levels of spiritual power This will be followed by a program of unusual interest covered by agenda which will be in the hands of the delegates who will have opportunity to personally participate in the discussions "Making a Missionary Church" Is the topic of the agenda and the address at this session will be delivered by a missionary The afternoon session will begin with simultaneous conferences from 1 to 2 o'clock held by the missionary organizations and religious education workers Then will come a period for the discussion of the brotherhood's business at which time among other things the home and foreign survey will be considered The board of education and state missions are on the program for 25 minutes each and a missionary will I presented to the club free of charge The president following the kill of the body will appoint delegates to the federation convention in Alexandria in November Owing to the opening of the Louisiana State Fair there will be no further Thursday afternoon program teas until November 8 Following adjournment of the business session Mrs Harry Johnson chairman of the division of music took charge of the program and introduced Mr and Mrs George Proudfit in recital Seldom have music lovers been treated to so wholly delightful a feast of melody Mr Proudfit who Is professor of violin at Centenary college and comes to us from the chair of music at the State Normal In Natchitoches is a pastmaster of his art The strains that vibrated from his old Arnett violin were entrancing and coupled with the exquisitely harmonious accompaniment of Mrs Proudfit must have delighted the angel -Israfel" himself Mrs Proudfit is unusually talented both as accompanist and singer Her polished coloratura soprano has a wide range and she was most beautifully accompanied throughout by Miss Patti Zeigler Her outstanding selection was "Charmante Oiseau" (from "La Per le du by David Both artists possess a notably finished technique The club was honored by a very short visit and a few well chosen words from Miss Martha Attwood the Metropolitan Opera singer who Is the guest of the American Legion in Shreveport The afternoon closed with an informal gathering in the flower-decked reception rooms of the club where from a handsomely appointed table Mrs Wiltz Ledbetter was charged with murder and placed under $7500 bond late Thursday following the shooting of Bracken a prisoner In the county Jail The shooting is said to bays climaxed high feeling between Jail attendants and the prisoners Three bullets struck Bracken and he died almost instantly The prisoner was being held for authorities who were to take him to the penitentiary at Huntsville BY SUNFLOWER DALY Somebody must have failed to inform the buddies of the American Legion of plans to go over the top for last evening's concert given under auspices of that organization by Martha Attwood soprano of the Metropolitan Opera company and Alessandro Alberint baritone For the audience was small including mostly the musicians of the city and I think it safe to say there were not a dozen legionnaires present Perhaps it Is no part of my duty to chide them but I could not help remarking their absence: the singers too must have felt it As a matter of fact the handful of Shreveporters present were almost 'lost" in the big auditorium of Byrd High school where the concert was held and there was a sort of chill over the entire proceedings: indeed it would have been remarkable if Miss Attwood and Mr Alberini had found it possible to put into their efforts that enthusiasm anci spirit so necessary to the complete success of an undertaking such as theirs Both are gifted with voices of fine 'quality and the program offered was varied enough to meet all tastes and all there was lacking that something which only filled seats can give Perhaps the high spot of the evening's entertainment came with the singing of a number entitled "Proposal" written by Miss Towns-ley the accompanist and dedicated to Miss Attwood In response to insistent demands Miss Attwood responded with a negro spiritual "Wait Till I Put on My Crown" which was beautifully rendered Mr Alberinrs best number I thought was Tosti's "Could though he sang it in familiar air "caught on" with those present There were two duets by Miss Attwood and Mr Alberini and by special request Miss Townsley gave a piano number playing "The Dance of the Gnomes" by Liszt The program was as follows: Rammentr (Cam-pane) Miss Attwood and Mr Alberint Flange' (Handel) Mr Alberini la Notte" from "Il Trovatore" (Verdi) Miss Attwood Tost I) "Or Chlo Segue nu" (Florldia) "Visione Veneziana" (Brogi) Mr Alberint of Thyme"
