Commit- tee Mary Storz Alfred De Simone and Charles Vignieri It is not only the Indians who are against the action however Andrea Utile representing the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America told the commItteee that it would be "painful inappropriate and insensitive" for the Legislature to rename the highway because Columbus "dismembered the culture of the indigenous people" But Andrea said "I see no reason why we cannot pass this bill as an honor to the acknowleged discoverer of the Americas For 498 years we have not heard these complaints about Columbus and I would encourage you to vote in favor of this bill" The bill is scheduled for more debate and consideration in the session beginning in October Arthur Schneiderman Arthur Schneiderman 35 Alexandria' Va died Sept 9 1991 in a house (baseball player Joe) Di Maggio and (Guglielmo) Marconi (inventor of the wireless telegraph) My constituents are strongly behind this bill and I am strongly behind this bill and will push to see it pass this session" In 1492 Columbus sailed the 4 otean blue In 1992 some want his name on a highway too I Among them is state Sen i Joseph Andrea D-Kenosha He's joined others in the Legislature who want to rename Highway 1 151 betwer Madison and Fond 1 du Lac as 1)art of the Columbus I Quincentenary Celebration planned for next year 1 The highway passes through the town of Columbus I A bill to confer the highway honor has already been proposed in the Assembly by state Rep I Eugene Hahn D-Cambria Andrea said he will sponsor similar 1 4 legislation in the Senate The move has caused an out cry among Indian groups who 5 deem it an insult Rick Hill a 1 member of the Oneida tribe told the Assembly Highways Committee last week "(Columbus) 5 is from the same league as I Hitler and Saddam (Hussein) I think the man has been responsible for the death of three million Indian people over time" Zoltan Orossan of the Midwest Treaty Network told the committee that renaming the highway for Columbus would worsen the states worldwide reputation as a place where Indians are harassed when they exercise their rights to spearfish The coming celebrations have already been criticized as Andrea
