LAURA VERAS MARRAN KENOSHA NEWS CORRESPONDENT International Cycling Series Executive Director Otto Wenz Jr waste any words when describing Food Folks status in the prestigious event: "The Wenz said groups that make it part of their day Then the timing of the ProSr 1-2 race at 6 pm is just right for people getting off Wenz is creator and director of the 32-year-old series which started as a novelty race at Summerfest in 1969 and grew into the premier multistage cycling event After seeing the event evolve from its humble start 11 years ago Wenz has had consistent high praise for all the organizations and volunteers that has helped the local event blossom This year Food Folks Spokes coincided with the American Bicycle Racing National Championship Friday at the Washington Park Velodrome Many Juniors Seniors and Masters racers trekked from the Velodrome to the Library Square course to race in both events Velodrome Director Tim Kemen said is the first year anything like this of Two Rivers Josh Jacobs of Kenosha and Chris Goettig of Two Rivers rounded out the top four finishers Brad Kemen of Kenosha took sixth place Racine resident Aaron Kacala who competes for Kenosha VeloSport won the 13-15-year old race Scott Hempel of Waukesha Ulric DeYoung of Wauwatosa Eric Maertens of West Chicago Dl and Daniel Stevens of Rockford 111 rounded out the Top 5 Kenoshans John Cantwell Jamie Jacobs Donald Flesch and Amy Sorensen placed seventh through 10th Tim McGlinn and Shandra Cebula both of Kenosha finished 12th and 13th respectively 30-mile race Friday Engwis wins Junior 10-12 The stage then switched from the elder statesmen to the youngest USCF riders In the Junior 10-12 two-lap race David Engwis crossed the line first after working at the front with UAW teammate run- ner-up Chris Flesch Next up were Kyle Peters Allison McGlynn in rapid sue- cession Teamwork pays off for Nowak BY SCOTT KOKER KENOSHA NEWS Laura Charameda combined a lot of skill with a little bit of luck to win the Food Folks Spokes 40-mile race Friday afternoon at Library Park One of tires went flat right after she sprinted ahead of Angela Vargas and Dana Vickeir for her fourth career Food Folks Spokes victory even notice the tire was flat until I rolled Charameda said good-negs it lasted until then all of that work it been a drag to' quit because of a flat in the final couple of laps Fortunately it happen until the finish Charameda of Fulton Calif took the top spot from Ann Turin of Brampton Ohio with five laps to go but her victory was far from secure as the lead shifted hands at least five more HAD GUYS helping me keep the pace up It was all teamwork Maciej Nowak Senior Category 4-5 winner was nice to get a win Nowak said win in the 14th day of the 16-day International Cycling Series will give him a boost in the Category 4-5 overall standings where he was seventh with 81 points coming in Matthew Hebard of Just Pedal Faster who was not listed in field 'has a commanding lead with 163 points Godkin tkes 40-plus In an exciting Masters 40-plus finish spectators got a lesson in the fine points of bike facing While two Team Mack teammates were the first here and riding my bike again is just awesome I ride as hard as I used to but just happy to be out here competing again It was hard for me to even watch bike racing when I was Although it was her Ryan Dibble Monsoon Racing Ft Collins Colo Nowak was slightly behind the other two leaders but powered past them jat the finish line I had a lot of said the 24-year-old Nowak had guys helping me keep the pace up It was all Nowak said his strategy -included staying among the top 3 throughout the race the front to give him better opportunity to visualize the field and steer around a crash if hdoessary Fortunately both of the morning races were crash-free only the newly-paved downtown streets The win was particularly sweet for Nowak who is a regular competitor at the Washington Park
