Kellv Alexandpiv' The Holy Spirit Academy Drama Club will celebrate the era of bobby sox, poodle Bkirts and hot rods in its spring musical, "Nifty Fifties," to be presented April 30 and May 1 at 7 p.m. at the school auditorium at Fourth and Seybert streets, Hazleton.

Tickets will be sold at the door. The play is set in the fictional "Louise's Luncheonte" in the mid-1950s, and reflects the fads and fashions of that era. "The cast has had a great time putting this play together, and with TV shows and movies spotlighting that same era, they have been doing their homework to recreate the 50s," director Judiann McGrogan said. "We have over 50 students, from kindergarten through the sixth grade, and they will be wearing everything from let-terman sweaters to leather jackets for this production. But while the clothes and the fads are fascinating, it will be the music that really puts the audience in the 50s mood." The story of "Nifty Fifties" revolves around the a 1 1 -American girl, Gracie, one of many young students who hang out at Louise's each day after school.

Gracie, played by sixth-grader Kelly Alexander, is in charge of the school dance, and since the school's gymnasium is under construction, has arranged for the dance to take place in the Luncheonette. But Gracie's rival, the snobbish Muffin Mansfield (played by Lindsey Kreiger), scoffs at the idea, and predicts the dance will be a disaster. Gracie and Muffin are competing for the attentions of the new transfer student, George, played by James McAndrew. Desperate to show up Muffin, Gracie announces that she has arranged for the big rock star Ziggy Springer to perform. Then, with her best friends Rose Marie (Amanda Hopeck) and Evelyn (Megan Caputo), Gracie must come up with a plan to actually snag Ziggy, played by Dennis Evans, for the show.

Gracie is helped in her effort by Donald, the soda jerk, played by Brandon Kowalczyk, Jughead (Jonathan Evans); Louise (Amanda 1 Schelhammer), and her waitresses, Edna (Kayleen Wright) and Virginia (Marisol Velez). But she often gets sidetracked by her brother, Bob (Michael Dougherty), who has run into some trouble with the town rebel, Sinbad Gallucci (Josh Farley). Original songs, written by Bill Regular Pizza Delivered Only Offer expires 43098 CongratuCations Dr. David Ulagner for 50 years in dentistry and still Love, Wilma, Jane and JoAnne 459-3400 km Francoeur, are reminiscent of the 50s style, which marked the beginnings of rock and roll. They include Bop-A-Lu-Bop, Rock Around the Block, Hippity Hop, and a tribute to the icon of the 50s, Edsel.

Cast members are learning the music from vocal directors Helene Seamon and Linda Kistler. And high spirited dances will be featured thanks to choreographers Anna Mae Fiore, Anna Paisley, Michele Girosky and Kelly Lucadamo. "The music definitely makes this play, and I'm very grateful to my co-directorsr who have really made the 50s come alive for these children through these songs. We've incorporated numerous dance styles from the period in our dance numbers, and the students perform them with the perfection of an adult," McGrogan said. This is the drama club's 11th annual production and gives all the students at Holy Spirit the chance to act.

"The Holy Spirit Club, as well as our sister organization, the MPB Community Players, have been giving local residents of all ages the opportunity to perform for well over a decade," McGrogan said. "We are especially proud to give the students of Holy Spirit this unique and exciting opportunity to be a part of a full fledged theatrical production. All we ask of them in return is their commitment to the show for our three-month 4s are frie" Ml corner of Pine Beech Streets 'Since 1969 The Area's Most Trusted Shop" ALL WORK GUARANTEED FREE ROAD CHECK PA. Homemade Soup Daily rehearsal period. And it's most rewarding for us to see that commitment, and to recognize it as a sign that these children are enjoying their opportunits to perform before an audience." The annual productions are put together by a large group of volunteers, who work to pull the play into shape within a three-month rehearsal period. The technical aspects of the program are handled by a skilled and enthusiastic crew of volunteers. Sets are designed by artistic director Natalie Paisley, and construction is coordinated by Mike Paisley. Volunteers on both committees have spent hundreds of hours building and painting the sets and set pieces.

Those volunteers, in addition to a technical crew of mostly junior and senior high school students, will run the backstage operation under the direction of stage manager-technical director Matthew Howey. Costumes are the final ingredient, and McGrogan noted that, as usual, they are being constructed by a large number of volunteer costume makers lead by designers Mary Bugda, Carmella Howey, Ginny Lucadamo, Judy Zaremba and Mary Ann Zubris. McGrogan said the success and long-term endurance of the drama club is due in large part to the volunteers, whose commitment to the children and the theater itself has given the group the ability to thrive. "I am very grateful to each of these individuals, and hope they know that thrie contirbution of time and talent is going a long way in helping these students to grow." Many volunteers for the school's productions are also part of the M.P.B. Players, who produce a full-length musical each fall.

And McGrogan credited the students themselves for the show's success. "This particular show was meant to be produced for high school students or older, and the fact that these young people have pulled it off is really a credit to their talent, their determination, and their maturity. From the youngest kindergarten students singing in the chorus to the sixth-graders playing main characters, each have done their job to see to the success of this production, and I am extremely proud of them." "Nifty Fifties" is open to the public. Tickets are sold at the door. For information, call 459-0054 or 454-3305.
