UuMM.HfHI'irwHTi UH uUiiiWltf4Ma Cable TV rolls, 20-5 Greg Heller led a high-powered offensive attack with two doubles and a pair of singles as Cable TV blasted the Jeddo Stars, 20-5, Friday evening in Valley Senior Babe Ruth baseball. The winners broke a scoreless tie with nine runs in the second inning and coasted home with the victory. John Mardyniak and Ron Heller opened the big outburst with back-to-back singles before Heller lined an RBI single. After Toby Yost followed with another run-scoring single, Mike Luksavage ripped a two-run triple for a 4-0 lead.

Carl Kapes kept the inning going with a run-scoring single and Wayne Jurus reached base on an error before John Petrylak stroked an RBI single. In his second at-bat of the inning, Mardyniak collected a two-run double, and after Ron Heller hit another single, Greg Heller capped the inning with a run-scoring single. Ron Heller collected five singles for the winners while Petrylak added three singles. Luksavage pitched in with a triple and single followed by Mar-dyniak's double and single. Tom Kepping doubled, Kapes had two singles and Clifford and Yost both had a single.

Doug Johnson, Brian Sartori and John Sullivan singled for Jeddo Stars. Luksavage was the winning pitcher and Sartori was tagged with the loss. Cable TV improved its record to 2-0 and will play at Franklin Township Monday. When pitcher Rich Brady of Holy Ghost Prep in suburban Philadelphia scouts an upcoming opponent, he must decide not only how to pitch to a hitter, but which arm to use. Meet Pennsylvania's first switch pitcher.

"I've never seen anything like him," Holy Ghost Prep coach Ted Grabowski told The Philadelphia Inquirer. "I think he's equally good from both sides." Brady, a junior right-hander uh, left-hander er, both-hander began his switch pitching at age 7, after encouragement from an uncle, Louis Mancini. A right-handed pitcher since his T-Ball days, he took seven years to get the confidence to pitch left-handed in game competition. This season, Brady and his coach decide before a game which arm Brady will use. As a right-hander, he was 5-0 with a 1.78 ERA over 23 1-3 innings during the regular season.

As a left-hander, he was 2-0 with an 0.89 ERA in 15 2-3 innings. Brady thinks he had more control as a left-hander and more speed as a right-hander, though statistics don't back that up. He allowed 12 walks as a lefty and 14 as a righty. Interestingly, the switch pitcher isn't a switch hitter. He bats strictly right-handed, hitting .250 with two home runs and 11 RBIs during the season.

Brady's switch pitching has understandably created some interesting scenarios. He tried pitching from both sides in the same inning in a game last season, but was ineffective because he hadn't had time to warm up his other arm. Under high school rules, he can pitch from both sides in the same inning, but not to the same batter. In a District 1 playoff game against Springfield-Delco last week, he pitched five shutout innings as a right-hander, then began warming up again as a left-hander when his relievers ran into problems. When Brady is asked if he's a natural right-hander or lefthander, he's not sure how to answer.

He bats right-handed, but plays first base as a left-hander Car Wash Auto Spa and the outfield as a right-hander. He shoots a basketball right-handed and writes left-handed. "He's like three players," Grabowski told The Inquirer. "Two arms and a bat" A-coupTe of other Pennsylvania high school pitchers ran into problems because they used their arms too much. Eastern York was forced to forfeit its District 3 Class AA quarterfinal game against East Juniata when it was detected using a pitcher, Nathan Barshinger, who had exceeded his allowable weekly allotment of innings.

Just two days before, Barshinger had pitched a seven-inning, 3-0 shutout over Fleetwood. National high school rules dictate that a pitcher must have three calendar days of rest. "That's not the way I like to win a ballgame, but that's what the rules are made for," East Juniata coach Glenn Grimm told the Lewistown Sentinel. "I knew the kid pitched seven innings. I talked to Fleetwood's coach after the game." Several days before, Blacklick Valley was forced to forfeit a 12-11 victory over Penns Valley in a Class AA District 6 game after pitcher Brian Hoffman pitched into the 10th inning.

High school rules limit a pitcher to nine innings per outing. Cary" Kolat of Jefferson-Morgan and Jeff Kapusta of Greensburg Salem were named to the Amateur Wrestling News high school All-America team. Kolat was the first teamer at 135 pounds and Kapusta was third team at 112. Kolat advanced three rounds deep into the U.S. Olympic team wrestle-offs in Philadelphia before losing to Team Foxcatcher teammate Steve Knight 7-6.

Kolat led the match 6-1 before becoming too defensive against the University of Iowa wrestler. Last winter, Knight finished second to Kolat in the Henri Deglane championships in France. Foxcatcher coach Greg Strobel said Kolat erred by letting up too early in the match. "That's where the maturity factor of him being a high school wrestler comes in," Strobel said. Kolat advanced further in the Olympic trials than any U.S.

prep wrestler since Erie's Jimmy Carr made the 1972 team as a 16-year-old high school junior.
