bear any and all complaints as to the fairness of theairness of The street sweepers formed the topic of discussion at the Board of Trade meeting last evening, and it was a lively discussion, scintillating with thrusts, inu-endoes and insinuation. From what was said it would seem that about one dozen street sweepers, more or less, will just about be enough to keep the streets of the city in proper condition, and unless they are furnished there promises to be an uprising that will discount the celebrated Haymarket riot. When one gentleman had made an eloquent plea for street sweepers, more street sweepers, Councilman and Secretary Troup responded that under present circumstances the city could not afford to purchase a consignment of these useful and dust provoking contrivances. "Then trade your old market house for some sweepers," came in strong and yet dulcet tones from Mr. George B.

Watson. That gentleman started the ball rolling, lie described the filthy condition in which the various paved streets of the city are just at present, declared that the streets would all be ruined before they were paid for if they were not cleaned, said the negelcct was almost criminal and asserted that "it is cheaper to take care of payed streets than to repair them every two or three years." Mr. Ford censured the road for not keeping its tracks in repair, and thought that a good place to beein the work of reform. Mr. llilliker arose to state Uiat he bad not had any intimation that the members of the city council were to be placed on trial, but that if he had known such to have been the program he would have had a defence- ready.

He declared' that the trouble lay with the board of police commissioners in failing to enforce the city ordinances, and the loose manner in which franchises had been granted. The discussion waxed warm and inter esting and when the meeting broke up nothing had been done and several gentlemen were decidedly warm "under the collar." A representative of the Jay Ilawker Manufacturing company was present and made a proposition looking toward putting In a plant here. The Kansas City Fire Supply company submitted a proposition to remove their plant, now located on the Missouri side to the South side.
