The shift to the buyer's market means the turn in the price spiral has come This year will be a year of adjustment Right now prices are on a sort of plateau with some declines particularly in soft goods It looks as though the decline will be gradual with some lines of merchandise not dropping Indeed china and glassware (particularly stemware) have only recently taken a rise which isn't yet reflected in all stores Wool floor covering is showing indications of firm or even higher prices And one thing to bear in mind is this: It's devoutly to be hoped that there will never be a drastic drop in prices for a sudden and steep drop is the kind of thing that ultimately leads to closing dovvm plants and putting men and women out of work By MRS GENEVIEVE SMITH yOU'RE hearing a lot about the return of the -buyers' market" these days Just what does that mean to you as a busy homemaker with a family that needs so many things and a home that's fairly crying for this and that? That much-talked-of buyer's market means a return to prewar buying with merchandise plentiful enough to enable you to make a good choice With the prevailing price levels it also means cautious buying if- the budget is going to be stretched very far beyond the "must" list of food shelter and necessities The plentiful supply of merchandise means the end of desperation buying the days when you'd take any size or quality of towels or sheets say because you had to have them Plentiful merchandise supplies also lead to greater selling efforts on the part of manufacturers and retailers Thus you'll see a return of promotions such as the long established sale events and special sales Some stores are even restoring Dollar 'Day events CHANCES are you've never thought much about carting furniture into a consequences in this movement for quality at reasonable prices That is the establishment of a policy of selling laboratory tested quality by one of the world's largest wholesale establishments which services some 35000 retailers over the country This means that established quality ultimately will be available to most of the families of this country In the past testing merchandise has been left principally manufacturers the larger stores This is the first time that a wholesale concern has set out on a long range program in the interest of better values for you the consumer Although this program is getting under way now it is a long pull proposition that will take time to get into high gear However some 30 different items of merchandise have now been tested and are available to
