10B TheParltNewi, Jan 2O, 1980 PJC squads split JACKSONVILLE Paris Junior College's Dragons struggled through a poor first half performance here Saturday night to take their first Texas Eastern Conference basketball win in a 54-47 decision over the Jacksonville Baptist College Jaguars. During the first half of play, the Dragons committed some 13 turnovers, which displeased Coach Bobby Weddle and allowed the JBC bunch to post a 30-28 halftime lead. Travis 8th boys take crockett Travis Middle School eighth grade boys posted a 49-45 win over Crockett Thursday. Ronald Tvvilty led the scoring for Travis with 19 points, while Carlton Mitchell added eight; Johnny Turner scored seven and Greg Reed scored four. Stevie Jackson led Crockett with 18 points, followed by Randy Stephens with eight and Williams and Richard Bartel added seven points each.

Bugged by your budget? Sell items you don't need Call 785-5538 "We really struggled in the first half," said Weddle following the contest. "We hurt ourselves. They (Jacksonville) didn't do anything special, we just kicked the ball around and made too many mistakes. "WHEN YOU make a lot of mistakes it lets another team get the best of you in a hurry." But, the PJC mistakes would not continue forever. The Dragons hit the hardwood running in the final period and quickly took the lead, behind the scoring performances of sophomores Carl Holland and Cedric Johnson.

Holland ended the evening with a game-high 15 points, while Johnson ripped the nets for 11 more to pace the Dragon performance. DESPITE HIS concern over the sluggish Dragon first half, Weddle expressed some pleasure with the win. "We came out in the second half and played better," Weddle commented. "We stopped some of the things they had been doing to us and made it work for us." Weddle added that the Dragons, "put enough together to win and that is important." The Dragons are now 9-8 on the season and 1-2 in TEC play. "THIS WIN was very important to us, since we have to play Tyler Monday- night," Weddle continued.

Of Tyler's Apaches, Weddle said. "They really have all it takes to be a champion. They have lots of ability at all facets of the game. "They shoot from outside real well, have lots of speed, jumping ability and are just real deep in talent. "We're going to have to play extremely well to win," Weddle added.

I.eANN PAUUSEN'S Lady Dragons were forced to find another opponent, since JBC does not participate in the TEC's women's cage race. The PJC women were expected to have little trouble in dealing with East Texas State University's Lionettes in Commerce Saturday night, but the ETSU quintet had other ideas, as they raced to a 61-47 upset win. "We played one of the worst games we have ever played," said Paulsen following the contest. "We didn't play very good defense, we didn't hustle and we just didn't think. We just played very poorly." The ETSU quintet, which entered the contest with a 110 season slate, found little trouble in handling the Lady Dragons and never trailed in thecontest.

ALTHOUGH THE Lady Dragons got a game-high tying 13-point performance from Debra Graves, the ETSU women took a 33-25 halftime lead into the final half of play and never surrendered it. "Our biggest problem was nothing went through the hole," Paulsen added. "We had the shots and took them. They just didn't go in. You can't win a game that way." For Paulsen, an even bigger problem is upcoming.

The Dragon ferns must now return home to ready for a Monday game with Tyler's women, who last week beat Eastern Oklahoma's women at that time ranked No. 1 in the nation. The Lady Dragons are now on the season and 1-10 in conference play. Bible, the former college football coaching great whose teams won 14 major conference titles, died Saturday in Austin.

He was 88. Bible died at approximately 3:30 p.m. Saturday, according to a spokesman at Saint David Hospital, where he had been hospitalized since a Nov. 27 stroke. Bible's teams captured five Southwest Conference football titles while he was coach at Texas from 1917 to 1928, and three SWC championships during his tenure at Texas from 1937 to 1946.

He also coached at Nebraska from 1929 to 1936 where his teams won six championships in what was then called the Big Six Conference. The University of Texas Sports Information office said Bible was selected by seven different football halls of fame, including the National Football Foundation Hall of Fame. PASADENA, Calif. (AP) "It's agonizing I am both happy and deeply frustrated," Pat Haden, sidelined No.l quarterback of the Los Angeles Rams, said as he resigned himself to watching Sunday's Super Bowl XIV from the stands, from the stands. This was the scene that the watch-fob field general out of Southern California had dreamed about ever since he joined the Rams in 1976.

Now, struck down by a midseason injury, he must squirm while a strong-armed young backup, Vince Ferragamo, attempts to unseat the champion Pitts burgh Steelers. "I am trying to be philosophical," Haden explained after leaving his law class Friday at Loyola University, "but I can't help being disappointed. It is particularly depressing for me because I am now 100 percent fit. "1 could play Sunday. In fact, I've been well enough to play the last four games, including those against Dallas and Tampa Bay.

But I got caught up in the injured reserve rule." Haden was put on the injured list after suffering a broken little finger on his throwing hand in the game at Seattle Nov. 4. Under the original rule he would have been automatically lost for the season but a modification enables a coach to make three returns a year. "Coach (Hay) Malavasi used his three moves before I was healthy," Haden lamented. was ironic.

I found it doubly disappointing because everything in my life has fallen together so beautifully. It's a bad rule." The blond-haired Rhodes Scholar has been the "forgotten man" as the Steelers and Rams practiced and helped beat the publicity drums during this past week of organized hype. He didn't show upatany of the practices. He was absent at the choreographed press conferences. Few of the more than 2,000 media people on hand took the trouble to inquire about him.

"I usually managed to see a couple of practices a week," Haden explained. "But I've been terribly busy this week. I am going to law school every day. And my wife, Cindy, is expecting our second child any day now." The first Haden offspring, Natalie, was born 14 months ago on the day that the Rams and Steelers last played, the Rams winning 10-7. "I told them to stop scheduling Pittsburgh," Pat said.

He said barring a quick call to the hospital he probably would watch the Super Bow! game not from the bench but in civvies from the press box. "Naturally, I am delighted that the Rams have made the Super Bowl and I think Vince has done a terrific job at quarterback." Leopards win, DELMAR West Lamar's Leopards, already looking at another crack at the Class state championship, continued their winning ways in District 36-B here Friday night in taking a 77-53 win from Delmar's Eagles. Leading scorers for West Lamar were: Jerry Washington with 17 points, Van Hilburn with 14, Robert Morgan with 11 and Kenneth Washington who also lead the team in rebounding, added 15. Delmar's J. B.

Edwards led scorers with 31 points and snatched 17 rebounds. In the first game of the evening, however, Delmar's Eagles held on to their top ranking in the district with a 76-47 win.
