Sunday December 10 1995 Baseball NBA Football Kenosha News D5 rollercoaster ride keeps twisting UW-La Crosse Eagles celebrate after winning national title MILWAUKEE Wisconsin baseball fans have had their ups and downs in the last two weeks look at both in this Hot Stove Update which will appear periodically during the long cold winter until base- ball and spring return On the down side Paul Molitor signed with the Minnesota Twins rather than the Brewers Sal Bando vice-president of baseball op- erations made signing Molitor a prior-: ityv I The Brewers made a two-year offer at more than $2 million per year and guaranteed Molitor a front office job after he retired from baseball I Molitor chose his hometown of Min-! neapolis over the town where he played for 15 years chose to go said a disappointed owner Bud Selig thought this was The Brewers could have used Moli- tor from a public relations aspect as much as what he might have left to contribute as a 39-year-old player He needs only 211 hits to reach 3000 in his career A chase of the 3000 mark would have created a lot of interest Molitor also would have rejoined his old teammates Jim Gantner who will be the first base coach this season and Robin Yount who does periodic coach-i ing and public relations work for the club Preliminary design for the new stadium from HKS Inc UW-La Crosse Div Ill champ SALEM Va (AP) The biggest play of the NCAA Division III championship game and the biggest pass of Craig career at UW-La Crosse came as a surprise to almost everyone including Kusick thought I would be going on one knee and downing the Kusick said of his 85-yard touchdown pass-play to Jeremy Earp in the first half The play gave La Crosse a 16-7 halftime lead against Rowan (NJ) and the unbeaten Eagles went on to win the Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl 36-7 Roger Harring who has won 232 games in 27 seasons as UW-La Crosse coach told Kusick to go deep because he thought the Profs were unaware he can throw 50 yards sure that surprised Harring said can throw it a UW-La Crosse also won the 1992 Stagg bowl Kusick completed 19 of 31 passes for 281 yards and four touchdowns La Crosse (14-0) allowed only four yards in the third quarter and gained 451 yards in the game against Rowan (10-3-1) which had held playoff opponents to 127 yards per game The Profs also turned the ball over six times Greg Lister who came into the game with 2223 passing yards and a 556 completion percentage was hindered by bruised ribs and completed only seven of 27 passes for 60 yards On those powerhouse Braves he went relatively unheralded I remember when Bruton was traded to Detroit in 1960 It started the breakup of the pennant-winning Braves For a 11-year-old kid who lived and died with the Braves it was a heartbreak Within months Bob Buhl Joe Adcock Eddie Mathews and others were traded Within a couple years the Braves left for Atlanta This 46-year-old writer still recovered Upbeat news: Before you get too depressed there was plenty of good news for state baseball fans The Brewers signed Kevin Seitzer right before the deadline Thursday night Seitzer would have become an unrestricted free agent at 11 pm Thursday and the Brewers would have lost their rights to negotiate with him until May 1 The sides came together on a one-year deal with a player option for 1997 Although he lacks the marquee value of Molitor Seitzer gives the Brewers just about the same thing on the field and in the clubhouse He can still hit is a scrappy competitor and a leader in the clubhouse The Brewers also are trying to re- new stadium A preliminary design for the facility is a beauty combining a space-age re-tractible roof with an old-fashioned overall look The combo presented an aesthetic challenge and while the preliminary design is just that preliminary it is looks like the designers know what they are doing The stadium still faces a court challenge which the state Supreme Court will hear next month Some Milwaukee officials still are pushing for a downtown site But it looks like those potential stumbling blocks will be passed over without too many problems A March groundbreaking is still planned So the missed attempt at signing Molitor and the loss of Bruton are downers but the long range future of the Brewers is looking better than it has in quite some time Look for another Hot Stove Update in January By that time you fellow baseball fans will need another warmup sign Surhoff who had a career year in 1995 If they retain Seitzer and Surhoff they will retain some veteran stability while trying to give some young players a chance to develop On the business side a report surfaced that Group Communications is considering offering games over cable Warner Cable the largest cable company in the state has notified subscribers that a Sports will be soon offered Officials of the Brewers and Bucks said they were cautiously optimistic that a deal will be worked out The Brewers have been without cable coverage since the ill-fated SportsVue folded in the mid-1980s Additional revenue from cable can only help the skinny wallets Stadium Update: The new stadium which is expected to make those team wallets fatter starting in 1999 is making progress The Southeast Wisconsin Professional Baseball District chose a designer HKS Inc of Dallas for the death: Fans who remember the Braves mourned the death of Billy Bruton who was the center-fielder for years in Milwaukee He played center during the pennant years but was probably best known for hitting a home run to win the first game in Milwaukee in 1953 Bruton was one of those outfielders who looked like he glided to a fly ball He was graceful with good speed and a strong throwing arm On a lesser team he would have been a big star Suns beaten by the Heat
