And there were the inevitable problems. ONE SCENE CALLED for much shouting, firing of pistols and a grand chase through the crowd.

A big airliner from Chicago was letting passengers off when the whole business began. An elderly woman emerging from the plane stopped in her tracks when she heard the shooting and shouting. Then she took in the big sign that informed her she had landed at Orly Aeroport in Paris, France. I hate to admit this," she said, turning shyly to the stewardess, but I think I have made a horrible mistake. and when they step off a plane and see television cameras and famous actors and actresses standing around, we have a hard time trying to keep them moving, a Lockheed official noted.

The cameraman for the show said: Several scenes called for large crowd shots. Our extras were supposed to stroll past the camera as if they were on their way home. But the passengers kept getting mixed with the actors. We had to shoot dozens of scenes over again because some tourist would spot the camera as he approached and walk right up and stare into it. Passengers emerging from planes which had just arrived at the field were met with a huge sign proclaiming Orly HU 4-8786 1033 E.

21st South ALSO National Heal ill Studios for Men In televisions salad days it was not uncommon for prop men and the wrong props to wind up "on earner causing consternation for the producers and a few laughs for the viewers. However, this situation has been remedied for the most part When the script calls for a Mr. Martin scene to be shot on Brooklyn Bridge, it is shot on Brooklyn Bridge or a reasonable and convincing facsimile thereof. A script for The Dick Powell Show recently called for scenes at Frances Orly Aeroport. While the desire to provide as much authenticity as possible was present, thrie were a couple of difficult problems.

The fact that the shows shooting schedule is limited to five days was one; the second was that the budget wouldnt allow flying a cast and crew of 50 persons to France for the necessary scenes. SO, THE NEXT-BEST possibility was to turn an American airport into Orly-for-a-day. The airport chosen was Lockheed's Air Terminal at Burbank. Mr. Powell, who doubles as producer-director (and actor for the series, instructed his prop men to give the airport a Gallic going over.

This meant that all the airport signs had to be switched from English to French. And to quote a comment from Jan Van Tamelen, art director for the show: You have no idea how many signs are around an airport until you have to change them all. A bigger problem, however, was controlling the thousands of air passengers who daily embark and disembark from the large airport, which handles approximately 500 aircraft daily.
