Henry R. Rose In a lecture at the Academy of Music emphasizing the vital part played In Washington's life by women. Says Tears Caased Career A woman's tears, his mother's, were' intimated by Dr. Rose as the indlreot cause of his career and fame. Those tears flowed profusely when as a lad he wanted to enter the British navy as midshipmen.

This would have meant almost certain oblivion and undoubtedly changed the course of his life, said Dr. Rose. But, heeding "his mother's sorrow, he gave up the idea, turned to surveying and in the woods received the first training in fearlessness, resourcefulness and leadership which characterized his later life. Cites Family's Influence Dr. Rose also pointed out the large part played in Washington's life by his wife, his stepdaughter, Nellie, and the women patriots of the-Revolution.

Discussing Washington in "the light of 200 years," Dr. Rose sees him as the same man as when he first entered history and prophesied that any new information will only tend to emphasize the human qualities of America's "unconquered leader." Cites Hunan Traits Among the human traits in Washington's makeup cited by Dr. Rose were his love of social life, his passion for dancing and his violent temper which often made him "swear like an angel." Washington was a tolerant re ligionist Although a member of Christ Church, he often worshiped in other ehurhces when away from home. He accepted men for their sincerity of character and purpose. Dr.

Rose said. Illustrated Lecture The lecture traced Washington's Hie from his birth to his death and Was Illustrated with colored slides. Dr. Rose Is lecturer for the City History Club of New York and pastor emeritus of the Newark Universally Church of the Redeemer. Jewish Charities PfanDnve Among Borough Dentists Dental Division of Fed-.

eration to Canvass 1,500 Men in Kings County The dental division of the Brooklyn Federation of Jewish Charities is planning to inaugurate a drive March 1 to solicit contributions from every Jewish dentist in Kings County. A meeting of the executive committee of the dental division was held yesterday noon at the Elks Club to map out plans. Dn Mendel Nevln is chairman ot the committee and Dr. Matthew D. Levin is vice Dr.

Max Pomeranz, president, and Dr. Julius Pensak, president-elect of the Kings County Medical Society, are on the committee. Other members are Dr. Jonas Selverstone, Dr. Abbott A.

Kauffman and Dr. Harry Werner. Dr. Nevln bOd Dr. Levin explained that there are about 1,600 Jewish dentists in Kings County.

The dental division itself has a membership of aboA 350. 8eeond Meeting "There la no reason why every Jewish dentist in our territory should not Join the Brooklyn Federation," said Dr. Nevln. "The Federation, working with 25 charitable organizations, needs their support more than ever now." Yesterday's meeting was the second i the executive committee has held to plan the drive. Later, was declared, captains will be appointed and 20 teams of canvassers will be formed, and Kings County will be divided into 20 territories for the solicitation.

"Many of the dentists are co-operating with the United Jewish Aid Society now," said Dr. Nevln, "giving free treatments to the poor. But we feel that we, as a bqdy of dentists, should not stop wit hthls. We must not only give our services but we must give money Similar Drive Last year a similar drive was held by the dental division of the Federation, and 200 new memberships in the Federation were obtained. This year the executive committee feels the canvass must be greater.

Clay Pipes as Cause of Cancer At a London Inquest recently on James Brown, aged 64, a scaffolder. who died from cancer of the tongue, the widow stated that he was a heavy smoker and was very fond of a clay pipe. The coroner (Dr. Edwin Smith) to Dr. Bronte, the pathologist: "We know he was rather partial to his clay pipe.

Would there be any relation between this malignant disease and the Dr. Bronte: "In my experience I have found cancer common among people who smoked clay pipes. I think it Is more than coincidence. The rough surface of the clay pipe Hicks to the tongue and causes Irritation." "Mr. Dooley Jr." became the proud possessors of a beautiful Sealyham playmate.

Now Has Own Dog Today In his own home in Queens he has a jolly 7-weeks'-old police puppy of his own to play with, to pet and to watch grow up into big, handsome police dog. Ownershipthe lact of possession he finds mighty exciting, more so than any play could be, though he thinks "Mr. Dooley" was a swell show. All during the performance Billy stood on tiptoes, the better to see how "Tommie" and "Janle" faied in their struggle to get and to keep the little sick puppy that a kindly pet keeper had given them, his mother, Mrs. H.

T. Madden, who accompanied him, said. Getting his puppy, though, didn't cause Billy any trouble. He's just lucky. Maybe the fact that he's 7 and so's the puppy, the difference being only one of years and months, had something to do with it.

Any way, mystic numbers or no, his name was the one drawn by Abraham It Straus officials for the attendance prize at the play. It Might Become 'Mr. Dooley' He hasn't decided what he's going to call it yet, though he thinks he may decide with "Tommie" and "Janle" that "Mr. Dooley" is as swell a name as there is for anybody's dog. The performance at which Billy drew his doggy was presented by the Children's Players.

This delightful comedy-drams ot child life by Rose Franken and Jane Lewis was directed by Adrienne Morrison, who founded the Players after her own retirement from the stage five years ago. Up until that time she was one of the best-known and most finished actresses on the English-speaking stage.
