8UMMA CUM LAUDE Maxwell Ross. Be tolerant, not a snob; couple your knowledge with good character, and so live as to inspire respect for the law, for the courts and for': the profession." Justice William F. Hagarty advised graduates of Bropkiyn; liaw School at the commencement this morning held in the U. P. Albee Theater.

President Richard Eddy Sykes conferred .640 degrees, 610 of which were L.l. to members of the senior '-Justice Edward Vice Dean John Howard Easterday were awarded honorary degrees of LL. D. Dean William Payson Richardson awarded the prizes and Rabbi Louis D. Gross delivered the invocation.

Stresses Need for Tolerance. Speaking' -of need for tolerance, Justice Hagarty exhorted the graduates- to- be loyal to their creed. "Sometimes .1 wonder," he said, "whether or not a loss of faith is not responsible' for the deplorable conditions reflected in our disregard of law, resulting in our reputation as a nation ot law breakers. Respect the other man's belief, because prejudice and bigotry reach far, the only possible effect of which is to destroy religion in all its forms, and the years of a Godless nation are The speaker warned graduates that if they intended to pursue law to'acquire wealth they would be disillusioned. A lawyer, he said, owes a duty to his Government to serve it.

in law, he should assist In the making of the laws, as well as in their administration. He should be a leader in the community in which he lives. He should inspire respect for the law, for the courts and for his profession." Respect for Courts Essential. Alluding to President Hoover's crime commission. Justice Hagarty said that the action "is a warning to us of a flaw, a grave weakness in the framework of the structure we have erected.

Respect for our courts Is essential. Fair criticism is healthy, and, at times, necessary and. justified. But general, indiscriminate and unjustified charges, which lessen public confidence in the judiciary, are blows at the foundation of the Government. I appreciate that at times thinking people, even members of the judiciary itself, are guilty of this offense, but it ''is none the less, a blow for that reason." That a lawyer should be firmly grounded in good character was stressed by the speaker.

"Brains alone never made a successful man," he declared. "Our penal institutions are crowded with men of brains, but who lack the beauty and strength of good character." "Just Be Yourselves." As to the commencement dictum of snobbishness Justice Hagarty told the graduates to "be yourselves under all circumstances; be just the man or woman that God made you and that he intenriori wv, to be." Arthur Block of 836 E. 15th and Dr. George Swetlow of 1616 Eastern Parkway, delivered the saluta-torian's addresses. I YOUR CAR IIOTELS AND RFSORTS We Use Genuine IX)NO ISLAND.
