and Tyler Verrel Mosere of Jersey City, plot 60x100, Berlin, Oct. 17 But for the lact uiat a distinct change in the terms v.hich governed the last match at Buenos Aires was found necessary in order to meet the conditions of the pending match between Dr. Alexander Alekhine of Paris and E. D. Bogoljubow of Triberg for the chess championship of the world.

Dr. Alekhine would be in safe possession of the title for another spell until a new challenger appeared. At the moment he is leading by the score of 6 games to 4. with 4 drawn. The figures of his encounter with Jose R.

Capablanca, whom he defeated, were 6 to 3. with 25 drawn. Having reached the required total of six wins, he must nevertheless keep on playing, under the new terms, until one or the other has to his credit a total of 15 "-a points, or a majority of 30 games, to which the contest wUI be limited. Three more will be contested here, the Berlin series having been scheduled to wind up by next Tuesday. After that the scene will shift to Holland, where sections of the match will be played at Amsterdam and The Hague six games in all.

The balance has been allotted to Wiesbaden, where the match started. Bogoljubow has already Improved upon Capablanca's record against Dr. Alekhine, who was defeated but three times at Buenos Aires in the course of three months. Here they have played but a month and ten days. In every respect the exhibitions which the two principals staged have been more lively and entertaining to the world-wide gallery than was the case in the preceding match.

Another feat to the credit of Bogoljubow is the winning of two games in succession the 13th and 14th. This he accomplished in face of the fact that his rival was leading hira by 6 2. Despite the discouraging outlook, the challenger buckled down to the work and was amply repaid for the confidence he undoubtedly has in his own powers. His handling of the 14th game, which he scored lart night, after two sessions which went to 71 moves, was a splendid demonstration of difficult end-game strategy. The 15th game is scheduled for this evening.

Following Is the score of the 14th game: 14TH GAME QT7YFN 3 AMBIT First Bogoljubow led the way into a dinerent variation of the Cambridge Springs defense. The champion netted twe pawns as a result of his rival's method of handling the opening. In desperation the latter sacrificed a piece for a couple or his opponent pawns, ana made an excellent but hopeless fight In a dimcult ending. In the 13th game the colors were reversed and Dr. Alekhine set out to show bow the white side should be dealt with.

He did improve on the play but, after missing a neat continuation at the 17th move, he fell into a trao that cost him a piece. It was a most extraordinary mischance to befall a world champion, but the incident merely went to prove that he, too, is human and therefore, prone to err. The scores: 12TH GAMEQUEEN'S GAMBIT DE CLINED. Boanl-iu bow. White.

Spiel mann. When Aron Nimzowitsch of Copenhagen and Rudolph Splelmann of Vienna met in the 19th round of the international tournament at Carlsbad two days before the final. the question of supremacy was practically settled. Nimzowitsch, by winning a game which went to 70 moves, spoiled the Austrian's bright chances. On the following day, Splelmann defeated Capablanca and paved the way for Ntmzowitsch's ultimate triumph.

But for a draw on the last day, Splelmann would have tied for first place. Nevertheless, to tie with Capablanca for second constituted one of the most brilliant efforts of his career. The score of the Nlmzowltsch- i DECLINED. Bogol- Altk- BoroI- Alek- Jubow. htne lubow, nine.

When the Blue and Gray captured the Brooklyn championship In 1927 and repeated last season, the 17-year-old 198-pounder figured conspicuously In the feats. Kirkland has never been given the credit he deserves, because he Is not of the flashy type, but a good consistent workman, who was Retting in effective licks thai were overshadowed by the spectacular scintillating of a high powered backf.eld. Owen is an ideal linesman, impregnable on the defense, a master at opening up holes on the offense, a dandy Owen Kirkland.

at taking out and providing interference and deadly tackier. He is a lad who refuses to be out-generaled. Owen has also been valuable to Poly In basketball as a varsity guard for one year and a crack point in lacrosse for three campaigns. He is also a smart baseball player, but gave it up for lacrosse. The boy's ability has not gone unrecognized at Dyker Heights.

He was awarded the Princeton Cup for excellence in athletics in 1028, and last spring re ceived the Columbia Cup for having a consistently high rating in his studies while engaging in athletics Kirkland Is a popular lad as is attested by the fact that he has served as president of the second, third, fourth and fifth forms. He is affiliated with the student council, Blue Key, Oasis and Alpha Iota Epsilon fraternity. He is a nephew of Owen E. Houghton, noted years ago as a track, basketball and base ball luminary at Manual Training High School. Announcement was made today by the Rev.

J. J. Brown, athletic director of Brooklyn Prep, that the score of the football game with St. Francis Prep last Saturday should be recorded as 21 to 0 Instead of 19 to 0. as originally reported.

Father Brown explained that he had asked Referee Darby for an Interpretation and understood the official to aay that it was a touchback and not a safety. Father Brown had occasion to discuss other matters with Ref erce Darby and the misunderstanding was corrected, the arbiter ruling that the play should have been scored as a safety. Therefore. Corines, Brooklyn Prep end, i entitled to two points, as It was he who tackled a St. Francis back be hind his own goal line.

At a recent meeting of the Gen eral Organization. R. Nicholas was chosen captain or the Marquand School cheering squad, and Woes-ner and Buckley were named his assistants. Nicholas is a dependable member of the Maroon's baseball and swimming aggregations. a Because his double duties conflicted, Milton Weinsteln, captain of the Erasmus Hall cheering squad.

has resigned as manager of the cross country team. Coach Joe Scar lets has appointed Frank Brenner to sueeeed Weinstein. Brenner has the necessary experience as he served as assistant manager of the track team last season and hat been elevated to the same post to which he has been assigned with tne narrier forces. Bill Pricher ot 8t Paul's School, is being heralded as the premier punter in the scholastic football ranks on Long Island. Bill gave a remarkable exhibition of kicking In the Brooklyn Prep cam and re peated hts educated toe stunts against Jamaica last Saturday.

Pricher ts also a clever lad at running with th oval. mil Frank Marshall Back. After an absence of nearly three months In Europe, Frank J. Marshall, the United States chess champion, returned yesterday with Mrs. Marshall on board the steamship Homeric of the White Star Line.

On July 19 last he sailed from New York in order to participate in the great international chess masters' tournament at Carlsbad, where, owing to ill health, he failed to come up to the expectations of his friends and finished in the second division in a field of 22 competitors. However, for his game with Sir George Thomas of England, whom he defeated, he received one of the brilliancy prizes. After finishing at Carlsbad ho spent some time in Paris, and from there went to Tunis in North Africa, where he spent nearly three weeks and played considerably against Arab onponcnts. These he found to be skilled players. A set of bronze chessmen, the handiwork of natives, was presented to him.

Returing to Paris, he waited there three weeks before he could obtain passage to this country. Undefeated at Barcelona. Neither Jose R. Capablanca nor Dr. 8.

Tartakower lost a game In the International tournament at Barcelona, the former being easily first, however. His only draw was with the second prize winner. All told there were eight prises, and Miss Vera Menchik of Hastings participated in the eighth. The final standing: Toull. Pleverf.

By taking the 12th game of the championship match, which opened the series at Berlin, Dr. Alexander Alekhine reached a total of six wins, without which It is not possible to become victor in the present struggle for premier world honors. Had the same conditions obtained at Berlin which governed the plsy at Buenos Aires, where Joss R. Capablanca yielded the crown, this match would have been at an end.

Although the champion, by scoring the half dozen, met a part of the conditions, he had at that time still to add 7i points to his total before claiming his reward. Tho.se points may be made up either by winning games outright or by drawing, thereby increasing hts score half a point at a time. For Bsgcljubow this state of affairs presents a well nigh insurmountable obstacle. However, he is not the one to be easily discouraged; in fact, he proceeded to win the 13th game. It was by a fluke, to be sure, but it counted nevertheless.
