John Q. Abbott, who represented this district in the Ohio senate for years as a republican, is home after spending1 a year in Utah as a member of the lite Indian commission. Ex-Senator Abbott says: "I am in favor of giving Congressman Roberts his seat because I know him to be morally a pure man. Roberts was a member of the constitutional convention in Utah which prohibited polygamy in the future. He was one of the.

most active advocates of the abolition of polygamy. He did not believe, however, that it would be right for men who had been led by a wrong religion to take unto themselves several wives to cast them all off save one when polygamy was abolished. He believed that those who had more than one wife should care for them as before and sustain them in the relations of matrimony into which they had entered. Under the circumstances I believe this was right." Si cial windfall, both of which the Missouri state university footfcall eleven received on Thanksgiving day, will without doubt have a lasting effect for good on the athletic at Columbia. Indeed, the twofold result has al ready made itself felt. It hts started the poweri that be at the Missouri university thinking along the right line.

Tne onesidednessof Thursday's con test demonstrated conclusively the superiority of the trained and dieted athlete over the one who is allowed to follow his own pleasured. In other wo ds it proved the value tof a football team of a regular training table. The Kansas boys have Jived separate from the rest oft the students and ate specially selected and prepared food for the last two witt Coach Yost as their only mentor. Oq the other band the TUers have never had anything like a training table. The difference In the condition of the two teams was the result and the cause Is patent to everyone who knows of the dissimilarity of their preparatory work.

The graduate coaches who wefd at Columbia the last week of training were not slow to realize toe handicap under which the Missouri players were working in not having a training table, aod they expressed themselves In forcible terms to the football man agers In regard to the The latter agreed with the veteran Tigers as to the crying need for regular train-lag quarters, but pleaded that a de pie ted state of finances as the cause of their fallureitb provide them. This silenced the remonstrances of the coaches for the time being, but after the game Thursday, when It was seen that each team would get about 2,000 as their share ot the profits. they returned to their argument. being, reinforced by several memters of the local alumni. The arguments were directed at Manager Roth well, but several mem bera of the Missouri 'vanity athletic board, who were up here to see the game, were also approached In regard to the much needed reformation All expressed themselves as heartily in favor of anything that would help football at Columbia, and promised the BOlicttuons graduates that they would put forth their best efforts to Twards establishing a training table at the university next season.

They also signified their intention of tryieg to engage a coach, for 1800 who has proved his ability by past successes. lu tula cuuuecbiuu ibis juicioiuiik to note that Prof. Roth well had sev eral long and earnest talks with Coach Yost before the teams lefLfor Colum bia and Lawrence respectively on Fri day morning. When asked if Missnuri was nego tiating wiih him for next year the K. U.

coach admitted that something of that sort was in the air. If the Col umbia management should secure Yost's services it would do wonders towards reviving athletics at the Mis- souri college town. It would also mean that M. U. would have a team in 1900'that would give a good account of itself.

Yost said after Thursday's game that there was enough material amoog the Tigers to make a great football team If properly coached, and he was cot alone In the opinion, many of the experts who eaw the game, agreeing with him. It was the remark prot ably that suggested to he Missouri management the idea of engaging Yost for nexii year. Yost's success with the Nebraskan's in '93 and again with the Jay hawker's in '99 is conclusive proof that If he is giyen the material he will do the rest and his advent at Colum bla next year would probably mean a winning team for Missouri. For the good of Missouri valley foot ball It is to be hoped that theCoumbla athletic association will be successful in their efforts to secure his services, Kansas City Star. A Bar Cure for Croap.
