doing time in the real big house And also where the fun begins What a whopping good brew of characters: an austere mother superior the best of Maggie Smith shy and sweet Sister Mary Robert (Wendy Makkena) the elderly and droll Sister Mary Lazarus (Mary Wickes) and the perky and impish Sister Mary Patrick (Kathy Najlmy) Deloris known as Sister Mary Clarence has trouble flt- Two films By Roger Ebert I saw two films made with passion One is elegant and intellectual and the other is raunchy and offensive but both were made by directors who knew exactly what they wanted to do and made no institutional food and the lack of drink and sneaks but one night to a neighborhood bar unknowingly followed by Mary Patrick and Mary Robert who pump up the volume and turn the place inside out The pride and joy Is its terrible choir a truly awful group that would make saints go out and kill sinners Deloris takes over adds her own spin and turns the group into a finger-popping Joy that becomes the hit of the diocese Church attendance soars and the convent soon is overrun with camera crews and other media hounds When Deloris unwittingly gets her face on television Vince sees her and Instant rub-out material The chase takes De- made with in a spiral of corruption crack addiction and compulsive gambling It would be easy to say is in good taste and in bad but that would miss the whole point After the safe films I saw at this festival forced to the conclusion that the best taste emerges when a director follows his heart and his obsessions and does not bow in the direction of predictable box office elements for example will certainly be classified NC-17 when it goes before the rating board and that will be bad for its commercial prospects Yet to cut this film would be unimaginable It is the story Of a vile weak man who has essentially abandoned his family for the consolations of crack and who uses his badge and his position on the New York police force to steal deal drugs and
