backs to their own goal line and after a blocked kick behind the goal line The other score came three minutes before the end of the period on a pass with the Ute secondary looking pretty bad on the play Statistics of the game give the Utes the but that mean an edge in the scoring The Utes piled up 206 yards from scrimmage as compared to the 159 for Colorado and 98 vards from passes to 96 for the Buffs That made a total yardage gam of 304 for the Utes and 255 for the Buffs The long "combination by Jenkins and McClung obviously inspired the Utes to stage their first touchdown drive McKissick was hurt when Jenkins power-housed through the Utah line on that brilliant first play and Speedte and Swan went into the ball game at end of the quarter for the Utes A lateral to Turner a buck by Pace and a 15-yard jaunt by Pace off tackle made it first down In the middle of the field A beautifully executed reverse to Turner took the ball to the Colorado 25-yard line and the Buffs were penalized 15 yards for unnecessary roughness on the play Pace smashed to the 10-yard marker after two line plays Spector went through to the two-yard line Turner made half a yard and then Turner took the ball over through the center of the line Spector 8 place-kick for the extra point was good of course The Utes kicked off and Colorado returned to the Utah 20-yard line Buffs made about eight yards In three tries and then kicked out of bounds on the Utah 32-yard line '1 hen the Utes started all over again mixing their passes with their brilliant running attack Two plunges netting short gains were followed by a clever run by Spector which put the ball on Utah 48-vard line Two plays the Colorado line was checking those Redskin line Swan passed to Speedie for a 13-yard gi'n putting the ball on the Colorado 25 yard stripe Another pair of line bucks was followed bv Speedie end-around play 'lhen came another pass from Pure to Spector this time It put the ball on the Colorado line On the next play Pace smashed through the line nearly to the 10-yard marker but fumbled 'lhe alert Bauer however was right there on the job and recovered Spector smashed off tackle to the four-yard line Pace obtained a first leg on the second Redskin scoie by going over the goal line on a delayed buck play was called back and Utah penalized five yards for being offsides But Pate went through on practically the same play to scoie Spector kick was good I to 8 eel tood rS PACE 6 tu 0 By Jimmy Hodgson The much-scorncd Colorado Buffaloes who started out to become the big football flop of the 1939 campaign stampeded all over the stadium Saturday when they saw the University of red shirts and trampled the Indians 21 to 14 in a thrilling display of offensive football that kept the 13 000 fans tied to their seats until the final gun Just as Denver last week reached unprecedented heights to battle the defending Big Seven champions to a standstill so Saturday did silver and gold firecrackers explode simultaneously in the faces of the astounded Utes The huge muscle machine which had been touted as the conference favorite at the start of the campaign finally became synchronized Through some inspiring play by John Pudlick acting captain and end and Lloyd Oliver who was playing his first game at tackle defense started to click The linemen charged like they have never charged before and for the first time went into action as though they really wanted to play the game Offense Sparkles The long-threatening offense was brought to life by a pair of sophomore tailbacks Paul McClung and Leo Stasica who are unquestionably two of the greatest backfield prospetts ever to ertyj up in this continence As a result the Colorado university squad with some of the finest football material in history in one single leap jumped from obscurity in the Bi Seven circuit into the position for the Mountain States end title Too much ci edit cannot he given Colorado for the triumph For a team that was sunnosed to have been torn by dissention the bovs in the Silver and Gold unifoims really put on a show Saturday The Buffaloes apnarently left anv Roubles they were supposed to have had in the di exsing room When they went out on the field they were clearly united in one purpose to beat Utah And they did it convincingly the hard way After having two touchdowns scored against them in the first quarter and finding themselves ti ailing 14-0 the Buffaloes started their charge and stop charging until the gun sounded to insure them the victory Strike Through Air Colorado struck at Utah's most vulnerable spot to win the game through the air After Utah had made two bulliant offensive drives of 80 anG5 yards to score twice McClung put new courage in the Buffs with a 69-ynrd return of the kick-off which might have been a touchdown if the fleet fooled Cfu los Soffe had not been able to overtake the star and bring him dow'n from lhe rear Then after the Utah Imp had stopped IT on the ground McClung heaved a beautiful pass to Vern Miller over the goal line for the eopnter The catch by Miller was unquestionably one of the greatest bits of football of the day It looked impossible to grab the leather but Miller made a despeiate lunge caught the ball as he was falling to the ground and hung on for the score It was a great play and was completed with the receiver apparently smothered Colorado had piepared for this game with the idea that their best chance for victory was through the air and when that touch down pass worked it was lust the signal loi a oigger aerial display Leo Stasica replaced McClung at tailback and his passes became deadly to John Pudlik This Pole to Pole combination completed three straight heaves on the following play which put Colorado in position for a second touchdown- iA 1 4 i fii: I tH 1 1 A i 'Vt I I MILLER V4 tc SWAN x1 -M Tribune Intermountain Service MOSCOW Idaho climbed back on the bandwagon this afternoon by defeating the
