an unpredictable weatherman an unlooked- for storm and a brisk wind with snow in every gust teamed up Thursday to almost hurl the Redskins of Utah for a fobtball but eventually they pierced the defensive armor of the Vandals shook off the shackles qf the weather man and laughed In the teeth of the storm for a 13-6 decision in the of stadium Thus for the assembled football faithful who tailed to sink their teeth in Thanksgiving turkey until they had partaken of the yearly collegiate football offering around these parts the day was a com 5- right end but was cornered by Laune Erickson and George Nixon Gay broke away to score leading his headgear play Giuck Turner gave the hall to Dale Sorensen and Sorensen lateralled to Adelt Adelt swept-wide around first touchdown Gay Adeltis shown and receiving the Big Seven football mantle on their sturdy shoulders by dint of Den-ver and Colorado failing to get-better than a tie in their last conference game in Denver 4113 Fans The Vandals for all they felt the full blast of the Redskins' pent-up energy in thesecond half were not half as "bruised" as was the Utah front office Only 4113 a far cry from the 12000 expected on hand to see the finale of the collegiate grid campaign for more than 30 minutes at least ldoked like the of was going to take a double licking the Vandals thanks to a touchdown in the first quarter being on the long three minutes after taking the opening kickoff Douglass wound up the steady drive by going off left tackle from the nine-yard line for the marker mdth booted the ball squarely between the goaJL posts on a placekick for what was to prove the deciding point Midway in the second quarter the Bill i kens launched a counterattack after a short punt gave them possession of the ball on the Raiders' 44-yard line Dick Weber started the St Jouchdown march with a 13-yard pass to Bob Osterholt and then alternated with Dick Pfuhl in toting the ball! the remaining 31 yards Pfuhl over for the tally standing up on a four-yard sweep around right end but Weber's try from placement for the extra pont was wide way mark in the third quarter The red-shirted machine on the hill however summoned Its all- around strength for a toudhdown-' drive in the third quarter apd fleet Izzy Spector gave his mates a one-point lead by booting the extra point straight through the uprights almost concealed by the Steadily falling snow Another surge in the fourth quarter paid touchdown dividends and the Utes thanks to their own ability to offset just about every obstacle a team could face rang down the curtain on a highly successful campaign Flying Colors silver and gold came out ef the storm with flying colors On paper the Vandals were given little chance of matching touchdown skill with the meandering Redskins but on the wind-swept stftdium field they just About proved their utter gameness as the socked it out through four action-crammed quarters without ever being in danger of being thoroughly routed As a matter of record the Vandals struck the hearts of the assembled faithful with a chill far colder than that of the biting blasts as they sent their point totals to 30 for the entire 1940 son with a touchdown in the middle of the first quarter As the clock ticked off passing minutes hopes of Idaho for a victory ascended into the gloomy haze which enveloped the -stadium and those within Bur the "Vandals failed to hold their lead and when final (CoittimuKl on Pig Twtnty-tourr By Louden Kelly DENVER Nov 21 UP) Sour breaks and gripping goal jine stands blunted every touchdown charge so Colorado and Denver both turned to a weapon as old as football the field goal and wound up their Thanksgiving day fixture in a 3 to 3 deadlock Thursday This may have been a stroke of gridiron justice because now the Big Seven title goes to Utah the team that beat both of them The Utes finished their league season Saturday a half game in front and winner would have shared the championship with them These old rivals turned for help to their kickers when assorted ground plays and forward passes failed in the pinch Early in the last period Ray Jenkins 215-pound fullback booted Colorado's three-pointer high and far from close to the sideline on Denver's 33-yard stripe Approximately 23000 spectators sitting in spnny nippy weather watched in electrical suspense as little Hank Walsmith stepped back and kicked the tying field goal from 18-yard line with less than a minute to play The kick started as if too low but cleared by two feet Denver earned at least a standoff because it outplayed its rival of 48 years on ground and in air and had the defensive toughness to smash two Colorado touchdown drives inside the 10-yard line The first of these crumpled only a foot short of the Denver goal line after Paul Mc-Clung ran a punt back 31 yards to the four He and Jenkins tried to hack through the Denver line but four stabs enough Some of the late arrivals in their seats when surprised with a line thrust-lateral Bob Riddell to Sam Sugarman for 46 yards and a touchdown in the opening period but the officials ruled toss traveled nullifying the score Two glittering punt returns by Sophomore Clinger who transferred to Denver from Vanderbilt preceded Walsmith 's pressure goal Clinger caught the kickoff that followed the scoring boot on his goeJ line and cam back for 67 yards with a lateral to Bob Gifford covering the last seven Denver Immediately profit from this but later Bob Hogan who played-left end for as It should be played tossed Colorado's Leo Staslca for a big loss on his 10-yard line punt for was wobbly and CUnger making an over-shoulder catch sped back 26 yards to the Colorado 14 late in the fray Colorado dug In for three downs Injuns Cheer Result of Denver Game The Utah gridders were just as interested in the Colorado-Denver football game as they in their own contest Thursday and as soon as they got into the dressing room after the game they wanted to know the Denver score Most of the boys had left when the news came in that Denver had tied the Buffs but the lads on hand put on a real celebration There was cheering and laugh ihg and back-pounding It was the finish of a great Thanksgiving day for the Indians Coach Ike Armstrong beamed with happiness as he told his gridders: out and have a good time earned it played some great football this The Indians planned to elect a captain after the game but there was too much excitement so the selection was postponed until Tuesday evening Coach Ted Bank paid full tribute to the Utes as a fine ball club and also expressed satisfaction with the manner in which his Vandals had performed Coach Bank was particularly impressed with Floyd Spendlove Rex Geary and Gay Adelt Jack Friel from Washington State who was supposed to referee the game had planned to fly here but he was grounded in the northwest and Umpire Don Reddish was moved up to referee and Homer Warner Big Seven commissioner stepped in to fill the post the first game that Homer has worked for several years but he was right at home on the gridiron The storm made officiating1 a toqgh job The rule callers had trouble finding the lines They had to get down on their hands and knees and brush away the snow and 'make -a regular survey oh one occasion The snow was piled high in fh? stands in places and a snow-ball fight broke out before the game ended In an attempt keep hls team warm Coach Armstrong ran his charges through a warmup drill in the field house and did not make an appearance on the field until two minutes before the kickoff Those members of the University of Utah athletic department who write out checks to pay off bills of an athletic nature Thursday found out that football and turkey here Tnurs day and slipped on the snowy and greasy gridiron in the stadium Thursday but It still had enough traction to plow over a pair of touchdowns- and trip the Idaho university eleven 13 to 6 The victory topped off a great season for the Redskins as Colorado and Denver punched each other right out of the title race and left the Utes the undisputed champions in the Big Seven conference their second title in three years The Indians had to prove their championship mettle to win the Turkey day battle The Vandals jumped into the lead in the opening quarter when George Nixon tossed a pass which was apparently knocked down by Captain Rex Geary But instead of being grounded it landed In the eager hands of Rudy Franklin and before the Utes knew what was happening the Idaho fullback was well on his way to a touchdown running 25 yards It was a good break for the Vandals but it is such 1 breaks that often decide football games played in weather conditions that faced the teams Thursday Earl Peirce knocked down the attempted place kick for the extra pplnt but at that stage of the contest the six points looked big awful big and looked bigger as the half ended with the Redskins unable to score A Come Hack to Win in Second Half But the Utes came back to win in the secon(d half Before ive minutes had been spent they had crossed the goal line Then to sew Up the battle they scored again in the final quarter both on the same play The scoring play was lined up from' a single wing formation (shown above) The ball was snapped to Fullback Chuck Ttirner who drove for the line passing the ball to Quarterback Dale Sorensen and continuing on for a fake buck Sorensen made a half-spin started around right end and after drawing the tacklers toward him he slipped a lateral pass to Gay Adelt tailback who swung wide around right end for the score On the first run Adelt was hit by Laune Erickson and Nixon on the four-yard line and appeared to be stopped but he broke away and left the two Vandals with only his headgear as he scampered over the pay line This play was the most effective that fhe Utes executed and whenever they needed yards badly It was this lateral pass end run that was called by the quarterbacks" Both Utah touchdowns were set up by 15-yard penalties for unnecessary roughness In the first case the penalty put the leather-on the Idaho 30-yard line from where Turner did some effective line bueklng to get the ball on the seven-yard marker before Gay Adelt carried It over Puts Balt on Idaho 10-Yard Line In the last quarter the 15-yard roughness penalty put the ball on the Idaho 10-yard line from where Gay took the ball on the lateral pass play to the left lor seven yards and then to the right for the score Outside of this scoring play a mousetrap play
