The Kingsport Times Kingsport Tennessee Monday June 24 1940 Three Hold Everything! Deaths ial and Narkets Four Lanes of Moving Traffic To Be Possible on New Highway Construction engineers said today that the new 60-foot wide Bristol highway when completed will be divided so as to have four lanes of moving traffic ten feet in width and two lanes next to curbs on either side of the street ten feet in width for parking They said that on either side of the center line there will be two lanes for moving traffic which can be regulated so that fast moving vehicles can stay in the lanes nearest to the center line while the slow moving vehicles can stay in the middle lanes The middle lanes also can be used for' vehicles passing whenever a hazard does not exist Whether the name of the thoroughfare will be changed from the Bristol highway to Center street remains to be decided later Local civic leaders predicted today that the question will raised in the future but that opinion is divided over changing the name of the new street Those in favor of changing the name to Center street pointed out that in reality the Bristol highway is an extension of Center street and that if known by the latter name the street would extend in a straight line from the city limits in Highland Park to the city limits at the west end of Kingsport The west end is to be paved eventually beginning at Shelby street and will be known as federal highway 11-W Work on the paving project is reported progressing rapidly with all concrete poured on' the 20-foot strip on the north side of the highway Engineers said the 20-foot strip on the south side of the high way is scheduled to be started today beginning at the intersection All paving will be completed on the Bristol highway before any is started on the Johnson City highway engineers said No Accidents Over Holiday Plea of Chief Chief of Police Crawford in an urgent appeal directed to motorists of the city requested that the Fourth of July this year be "a holiday instead of a horror day" A pointed out that during the past few years Kingsport motorists have taken cognizance of the hazards in driving caused by increased traffic on the streets and have established a record so far as accidents and in-juries are He said to- day he was especially anxious that the record be kept intact and that local motorists use necessary precaution while driving He pointed out also that Kingsport in the past has been fortunate ip keeping to a minimum the July 4th traffic toll which records veal have not -been the case throughout the nation He said all facilities of the police department will be available July 4th for the purpose of enforcing the traffic laws more strictly than ever before The officer said expectations are that there will be more visitors in the city July 4th than in the past and that there will be thousands of pedestrians crossing streets who axe entitled to the right-of-way over motor vehicle traffic Crawford said the local department will work in conjunction with the program of the National Safety Council for safety on highways and streets A program relative to motor vehicle traffic is being worked out from a safety angle Chief Crawford said and will be announced prior to July 4th- Petain Godson Defies Cabinet Seeks To Renew French Fight Prices E-iold Own in Slow Stock Deals By Victor Eubank New (jP) The stock market generally kept its head above water today despite adverse war news and indecisive domestic political trends Leaders mostly held to a narrow range some slipping occasionally and then recovering Fractional gains predominated near the fourth hour in exceptionally sluggish dealings Brokers felt the reported German armistice terms accepted by France had been pretty well discounted marketwise and it was believed enforcement of similar stern measures by Italy would bring few disturbing repercussions Armament spending at home remained the principal bullish argument In the meantime opening of the Republican national convention held much of Wall attention Bonds and commodities were spotty sterling moved lower in terms of the dollar Among resistant stocks the greater part of the session were Steel General Motors Sears Roebuck Glenn Martin Sperry American Airlines Du Pont Allied Chemical Union Carbide Central Pennsylvania Consolidated Edison Texas Corp and American Telephone Supported in the curb were Electric Bond Share Republic Aviation Sherwin Williams and Pennsylvania-Central Airlines As one analyst remarked: the market faces any further liquidation of importance it will have to come largely from investment holdings This inference may be clearly gathered from current loans which now stand at the lowest level ever recorded by the federal reserve compilation since the latter was begun almost 25 years In the matter of armament building as a market prop trade sources said large contracts are ready for signature at Washington probably this week Orders for 5500 army and navy planes were believed to be in the immediate offing Estimates were hard OK at least 60 new factories being built for production of munitions tanks guns and other equipment It was understood financing of these plants would be done by a combination of private and government funds Commission Houses with foreign connections suggested that big blocks of British-owned American stocks are still for sale presumably at prices nearer to those paid for them by the British treasury than to present quotations Some English selling was thought to have appeared last week Air transport shares were lively for a while as expanding aerial passenger traffic caused some observers to revise upward forecasts of 1940 profits for the principal companies in this line Rome 6s Milan 6s German government 7s and 5s and Denmark 4 Australian 4s rose around a point in brisk trade Dealers in the domestic list took a standoffish attitude in view of the many factors clouding the immediate future Foreign news was still studied closely for market clues but the Republican thing in existence to a Liable To Trial The French government at Bordeaux removed him from the cabinet dismissed him from the army and made him liable to court martial (if it can get its hands on him) as an example to other officers who share his feelings De Gaulle adhering to his course declared: armistice accepted by the government in Bordeaux delivers to our' enemy our arms our airplanes our gold our future capitulation has enslaved France completely and placed the government of Bordeaux under the immediate and direct dependence of the Germans and Italians independent government no longer exists on French territorial soil capable of safeguarding the interests of France and of the French people Our political institutions are not in a state to function by their own Therefore he said he is organizing his committee names to be announced soon with the determination of maintaining French independence war Is not he concluded live For international news see the Kingsport Times (By The Associated Frees) A husky handsome French soldier who vainly risked his professional neck 5 years ago to demand mechanization of the army brandished aloft today the standard of a free France defying the war faith in the Maglnot Line and argued for tanks and armored cars and planes Result: De Gaulle still in his forties was elevated to major general Paul Reynaud then premier already knew De Gaulle had backed him in fact when he urged the Chamber of Deputies in 1935 to authorize mechanization of at least 10 army divisions Kept Job On June 6 Reynaud made De Gaulle his special assistant in charge
