Lee Thomas News Shine Cart cons Government licized when it occurs in programs for but they want Oieir children watching scenes like hangings, which they might imitate and hurt themselves. The moral and psychological impact of such rarely seem to bother them. These, boiled down, are the major findings in a massive and unique study of American television viewers designed to find out how members of the mass audience feel about a medium that occupies more of their time and attention today than anything except sleep and work.

The research was undertaken in March and April 1960 by specially trained interviewers who two hours or more with men and women ranging in age from 18 to over 70 in 2,498 homes throughout the nation. The sample was carefully chosen to represent the total peculation, geographically, in terms of age, income and education. Results were puHed together, analyzed and studied by the Bureau of Applied Social Research of Columbia University, financed by a grant of the Columbia Broadcasting Co. Now they are revealed in a book, People Look at Television: A Study in Audience by Dr. Gary A.

Steiner of the University of Chicago, and published by Alfred A. Knopf. The study was designed to probe areas that which indicate merely the size of television unable to do more than hint at: What do people really think about television? Do they like the programs? Do their stated opinions about programs agree with their viewing habits? Does their education, Income and way irf Ufe have anyiiiing to do with the types of programs they turn to? The charts, graphs and commentary of the book were primarily concerned with what has hitherto been a area: reaction to, feelings about and of Here are some other findings about this the millions of which until now have been subjects of guessing, however educated: Men and alike say that television is the one development of the past 25 which had made life more enjoyable. (Men gave the automobile second place; women, liome laundry equipment.) Even so, the mass public still considers it a convenience-luxury. When people were asked what they could get along without for two or 3 months, television trailed automobiles, refrigerators, newspapers and telephones.

On the other hand, when their sets broke down, almost half the families managed to get them repaired the same day. Many freely admit to using their sets as electronic babysitters, in spite of all the high brow frowns about its including passivity. Women most enjoy variety and comedy shows (particularly family situations) and light drama. Men like sports and action shows.
