More candidates are expected before the filing deadline of Jan. 21. So far no Republican has stepped forward but at least one candidate under the GOP banner is expected.

The election will be for the two years remaining of LaFollette's four-year term. Schroeder was appointed Shriners to observe 50th year The Kenosha Shrine Club will mark 50 years of service with a dinner Jan. 29 at the Italian American Club. The anniversary dinner is expected to draw a large turnout, including a number of Shrine dignitaries. Gene Veconia is chairman of the event.

The Kenosha Shrine Club, which has about 400 members, is one of Tripoli Temple's liveliest lodges, supporting a variety of charitable activities. The Shriners man the kettles at Christmas for the Salvation Army, sponsor visits of underprivileged children to the Milwaukee Shrine Circus, operate a children's blood bank, and support the Shriners' 19 hospitals for crippled children and three burns centers. Sen. Jackson's campaign fund tops $1.1 million SEATTLE, Wash." (UPI) The campaign funds for Sen. Henry Jackson's as yet unannounced bid for the Democratic presidential nomination have hit $1.1 million.

"It's most encouraging," said Richard Kline, finance coordinator for the Jackson Planning Committee, which was created last July to raise money and make preliminary campaign plans. Kline said $1.1 million has been raised from 38 states through fund raisers and receptions and a mailing to key 1972 supporters of Sens. Ed Muskie, Hubert Humphrey, George McGovern and Bruce E. Schroeder district attorney by Gov. Lucey in August, 1972.

That fall he was elected to a full two-year term, and he was re last fall. Prior to becoming district attorney, Schroeder was Kenosha County's first juvenile prosecutor and was an assistant D.A. under former Dist. Atty. Burton Scott.

"We have been grappling with this problem locally and have met with some degree of success generally," he said. "We have helped many individuals retrieve money lost to a few unscrupulous merchants. However, additional legislation is needed on the state level to insure that in these troubled economic times, Wisconsin citizens receive full value in the marketplace." In the area of taxes, Schroeder said, "If we look at the inflationary trends, it is easy to see that taxes have led the spiral. "I will support any efforts, to hold state taxes to a bare. minimum.

I will oppose any efforts to increase the state sales Schroeder also called for an end to the one-week waiting period for unemployment benefits, calling such action a "major concern for Wisconsin He pledged a vigorous campaign and said he would try to meet as many voters as possible. (Kenosha News photo- by Norbert Bybee) Saving energy, money by control of thermostat BY MARY STEIN Staff Writer With the colder winter months starting, it is wise to take hints on how to save on energy use, and consequently saving money by, turning down thermostats at night. The Wisconsin Natural Gas Co. reports that if your thermostat is kept at 68 degrees during the day, you can save up to 6 per cent on your heating bill by turning it down 5 degrees at night when you're sleeping. The "dialing down" process should be used only twice a day- in the morning when you get up and at night before going to bed.

Otherwise, more energy is State tax refund coming? Early filing will cut wait MILWAUKEE- Wisconsin taxpayers expecting income tax refunds will receive them much sooner if they file their returns now, Lawrence M. Phillips, District Director of Internal Revenue for Wisconsin said today. "If you file now, there's a good chance you'll receive your refund in four to five weeks," he pointed out. "If you file later, you may have to wait as long as eight weeks," he added. "January is a relatively slow month at IRS Service Centers," he explained, "which means returns can be processed and refunds issued faster than later in the filing period." "During late March and April, however," said Phillips, "returns come in at an accelerated rate and the processing cycle takes longer, which delays refunds." "So if you want that refund fast, file early," Phillips advised.

"After all, it's your Taxpayers also can speed the processing of their return by using the pre-addressed label and the special envelope included in tax package they received in the mail, the IRS spokesman said. "Another tip I can offer taxpayers," Phillips said, "is to give some thought now to setting up a record- Louis Hanson to join Gaylord Nelson staff MILWAUKEE (UPI) J. Louis Hanson, formerly chairman of the Wisconsin Democratic Party, was expected to join the staff of Sen. Gaylord Nelson, D- in Washington, it was reported here. Hanson, 49, was expected to become Nelson's assistant, the Milwaukee Journal said.

Besides using more electricity when you turn on and off a flourescent bulb, you decrease the life of the starter and the bulb. Incandescent light bulbs coming? wait keeping system for next year. Rubin Carter gets another chance in court JERSEY CITY, N.J. (UPI) Former middleweight boxer Rubin "Hurricane" Carter has another chance at overturning his triple murder conviction. Carter and one-time sparring partner John Artis, both serving life sentences for the killings, unsuccessfully sought a new trial in October after the witnesses signed sworn affidavits saying they lied at the original trial.

After the request was denied Dec. 10, a second appeal was filed. A hearing on that appeal has been set Jan. 20. be turned on and off with relatively little damage to the bulb, and should be turned off save a little electricity.

But Wisconsin Electric Power says that saving is minute. The power company has to keep its power plants burning at night to keep the boilers ready for peak usage during the day, so Christmas lights, street lights, and home lights are a wise usage of power that already exists. For wise use of heat in your home, it should be weather sealed caulking and storm windows, and should beinsulated. The amount of savings also varies with the type of home you have brick and stone houses will retain heat more readily than a wood frame home. Cold or warm water cycles are recommended for dishwashers and washing machines to save as much as four per cent on your gas or electric bill.
