moments later the officers said they would let him go Hughes said when he returned to his car his wallet and the money were missing and that his waUet was returned by mail three days later without the money After he made a formal complaint to police Hughes said he received an anonymous telephone call at 3 am and a voice said you want your money come and get at a South Side intersection Hughes said he did not respond to the call He also testified he had been drinking the night of the incident Hughes was not charged and he said no disciplinary action has been taken against any police officer Charges of interfering with police disorderly conduct and assault are pending against Leftridge CHICAGO Black residents alleged Monday at a congressional hearing that they were beaten partly blinded robbed and intimidated by Chicago policemen in the last year The witnesses testified at the opening of hearings scheduled by Rep Ralph Metcalfe (D-Ill) to investigate charges of police harassment and brutality in the black community The first witness was a black dentist Herbert Odom who said police stopped him early this year because of a faulty license plate light Odom said he asked the officers not to search him on the street in the community where he practices but they refused his request handcuffed him and threw him in a police car Odom said one of the handcuffs caused his wrist and hand to swell but the police ignored his complaints Richard Leftridge testified that police beat him Feb 25 and his left eye had to be removed as a result Leftridge said he had accompanied a woman friend to her apartment to explain to her the meaning of an eviction notice when six patrolmen called by the landlady broke into the apartment Leftridge said his friend swore at a white policeman who
