Writer James Klotz simply accepted the fact that he would ftever play baseball or even walk without crutches again when he was afflicted with pblio at the age of 17 But today at 33 Klotz cannot accept the fact that he has-been named National Goodwill Worker of the Year Klotz 5514 89th St was chosen from among the 75000 Goodwill workers nationwide and worldwide He is and but is pleasantly surprised at being singled out by vote of his peers for the honor llotz received jt call from Robert Watkins executive director of Goodwill Industries of America telling him of the honor while he was at work at the local Goodwill Industries Store The Kenoshan was seated at his desk working on all the paperwork which accompanies the -supervision of a store in the growing Goodwill Industries Corp in the world Spinal bulbar polio was the disease which crippled the yoqng man while he was attending his 17th birthday celebration It paralyzed him completely and ended his hopes of a career playing baseball It moment of triumph he felt when after a month he was able to unwrap a stick of gum by himself The process took him 20 minutes Lying for hours in the hubbard tank designed to relax his muscles Klotz sang to pass the time One day Mrs Marjorie Morrow director of the Snap-on Tools Male Chorus overheard him and invited the young man to Join the 32 voice chorus He has remained an integral part of the group traveling along to concerts and programs ever since 1955 Klotz feels that his membership in the chorus has been beneficial for him He enjoys the pleasure the group brings to others too Through therapy Klotz regained the use of his left hand mid arm and partial use of the right He has learned to lock his knees and stand walk on crutches but must use a wheelchair at times Klotz credits his wife Joan as another important factor in his recovery The two weje dating when polio struck and Mrs Klotz although only a high school student at the time stood by him came to see me every day at the he said Then after I got out we continued to date and 'had wonderful times together everything to me" Joan continued to provide moral support while Klotz completed high school and while he attended
