All Are Welcome Sunrise Services Begin Day of Worship i Un taster ounday All Churches To Offer Special Programs Comity Seventh War Loan Drive Dates Are Set Increased Bond Quota Expected By Chairman John Arthur Reynolds of Fresno field representative of the Treasury Department was here Tuesday morning to confer with Adolph Kiersch local War Finance Committee Chairman relative to the Seventh War Loan sales campaign scheduled to begin May 14th and continue until July 1st Reynolds said that the Bond quota for the Newman area will be very much higher than ever before due to the fact that the Seventh War Loan is aimed at individual buying Quotas not yet definitely set will be based both upon population and savings accounts Credit will be given for all bond purchases made on or after April 7th even though the actual drive does not begin officially until May 14th Only Two Drives Reynolds stated that there will be only two War Loan drives this year instead of three as was the case last year hence the total sales sought will not be much above above the 1944 total it is believed He suggested to Kiersch that organization for the drive begin at an early date thus creat-ting the spirit which should carry this community quickly over the top Blood Donors Going To Modesto Next Wednesday i Newman and Crows Landing blood donors are to make their first trip to Modesto next Wednesday afternoon under the new arrangement whereby a Red Cross mobile unit visits that city in order to eliminate the long trip to the Oakland Bank A bus will leave the City Hall at one and Mrs Jensen and Harold Wilon chairmen of the project for the Newman Branch are hopeful that the vehicle will be filled to capacity in view of the brief time required to make the trip More Needed Yesterday though the number of reservations were far from equaling the capacity of the bus in spite of the urgent need of plasma for the Armed Forces Since the stay of the mobile unit in Modesto is limited and every moment must be utilized only those who place advance reservations with either Mrs Jensen or Wilson can be accepted Council To Employ Third lYEan On Police Force A third regular man is to be added to the police force the first of April the City Council authorizing Chief of Police Jensen to take that step during the board meeting Tuesday evening During the past several months extra men have alternated in handling the early morning short shift and performing relief duty total cost averaging between $135 and $140 per month At suggestion the Council voted to employ a third officer on a monthly basis with the three to arrange their own shifts and relieve each other on the customary days off duty The beginning salary was set at $165 per month with $10 to be added at the end of that probationary period Only routine matters occupied the remainder of the meeting An inventory of city property revealed adequate insurance7 coverage A gasoline storage tank permit was granted Parrish and permission was given Mamie Enos to repair a front porch at a cost of $60 Foothill Freeway Given Approval At Meeting East Side Spokesmen To Recommend New Route Unanimous endorsement was given Monday evening to the suggestion that any freeway constructed through the San Joaquin Valley follow a West Side route preferably skirting foothills of the Coast Range when representatives of Patterson Crows Landing Turlock Modesto Riverbank and Oakdale Chambers of Commerce met with those of the civic group at Newman Each delegation present agreed to recommend to their respective organizations that complete approval be accorded the plan of locating the proposed major highspeed highway along the West Side citing low cost of rights of-way and of construction as the route avoided cities presented no river crossings and shortened the distance between San Francisco and Los Angeles some sixty miles The action taken is to be called to the attention of a legislative highway committee at Sacramento next week when a bill relating to the construction of such a road through the valley is scheduled for hearing Carl Fauerso secretary of the Newman Chamber of Commerce reviewed the highway situation in general and pointed out the advantages of the West Side route over any attempt to bring 99 or 101 up to the standard desired at an almost prohibitive cost He displayed maps which revealed that a straight road could be built from Antioch south without encountering a single difficult engineering problem Robert Kimmel secretary of the Modesto Chamber of Commerce expressed the opinion that a freeway through Modesto would be a detriment to that city because of the subways involved while any attempt to skirt East Side communities practically involved the construction of a new road anyway Since the object of a freeway is to provide an uninterrupted flow of fast traffic Kimmel said the logical location was along the West Side with the further advantage that it would relieve pressure on 99 Turlock delegates spoke in the same vein Riverbank and Oakdale representatives favored the West Side route because it would lessen traffic on the East Side desired in order that trucks might more readily move their produce to market Douty John Delphia and Fleharty of Patterson and Walter Isom and Clark Parlier of Crows Landing urged immediate action on the matter Harry Schmidt of Gustine Merced County supervisor and a member of the highway committee of the Fresno Regional Council of the State Chamber of Commerce was also present The consensus was that all county groups should join in combatting any political aspects of the highway situation and insist that all road matters be judged strictly on their merits as efficient carriers of traffic State and federal engineers were quoted as looking with favor on a freeway traversing sparsely settled territory yet catering to densely populated areas through the medium of access roads Since federal money will no doubt be involved in such construction it was felt that military needs would be considered A West Side road would offer definite advantages in that regard HOME FROM VISIT Mrs Frank Palmtag returned Saturday from a ten-day
