His motto was a classic ot simplicity “Everything is gonna get better” Sherry R o b e r tson would always say “So why worry?” Sherry Robertson had the i real secret of living Happiness He wasn’t a miser about it either He was glad to share what he had with everyone Last Friday evening around 8 Calvin Griffith the President of the Minnesota Twins picked up the telephone and called Tom Mee the Twins’ Director of Public Relations at his k°“This is Calvin Griffith” he began ‘I don’t feel so good tonight I’ll tell you why My brother Sherry got killed m a car wreck” VERY CLOSE 260 the following year He moved into the front office after he was through playing and at the time of his death he was helpng his brother Calvin run the Twins as vice president and farm director of the club Packers7 Rich Moore Will Undergo Surgery MATT SNELL hard-hitting fullback for the New York Jets reports to New York’s Lenox Hill Hospital on crutches for recent treatment SnJl on his way to his best season ruptured his Achilles tendon in Oct 4 gi une against But-faio and will be out of action for remainder of the pro football season NORTHWESTERN TOUGH GREEN BAY (UPI)— The Green Bay Packers got more bad news from the sick bay Monday when doctors told them defensive tackle Rich Moore would have to undergo surgery Tuesday to repair a pulled Achilles tendon Moore injured the tendon in ’a 30-17 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles— a hard-played game that saw several other players also sent to the sidelines with injuries Eagles’ halfback Tom Woode-shick broke a bone in his ankle ’and will be lost for the season Packers’ center Ken Bowman fullback Travis Williams quarterback Bart Starr and defensive end Marty Amsler also were injured with Bowman and Williams the most seriously hurt DISLOCATED SHOULDER Bowman had a dislocated shoulder and Coach Phil Bengtson said there was a chance he would be able to play next Sunday against the San Francisco 49ers on the West Coast Williams suffered 'a sprained ankle which was badly swollen when he reported to the Packers’ training room Monday “It doesn’t look good” Bengtson said Starr already hurting from a variety of injuries suffered a couple of more bumps to an already ailing arm but Beng-tsen said “it looks like he will be all right” Amsler who was added to the Packers’ squad just prior to Sunday’s game pulled a leg muscle and should be ready to play next week Hayes Fears Mext Foe Sherry Robertson and Calvin Griffith were very close even for brothers They were among five boys and two girls adopted by their uncle Clark Griffith the Washington Senators’ late owner Clark Griffith and his wife were childless so what they did with Calvin was change his name legally and bring him up as their own son Sherry and Calvin loved to play baseball as kids and later with the elder Griffith’s blessing both put in time in the minors naturally in the Senators’ system Of the two Sherry showed more playing ability He made it to the big leagues with the Senators in 1940 stayed with them until 1952 and then was dealt to the A’s As a left-handed hitting shortstop third baseman and outfielder Sherry Robertson never compared with such Washington greats as Joe Cronin Buddy Lewis or Sam Rice but he did give an acceptable account of himself and was anything but a drawback He hit 251 with 11 homers and 42 RBIs in 1949 and League Play Ends Friday Regular league play in the Weber County junior high school football league will end Friday with three games Roy will go after a perfect record as it visits Bell while Wahlquist will be at manages Detroit and was with Robertson hunting pheasant and geese before he was killed “No matter how tired Sherry ever would be he s always find the energy and time to be hospitable I remember in spring training how he’d always have what he called his ‘Happy Hour’ It was open to anyone and everyone Sherry made sure you came along It didn’t matter whether it was for a drink a little fun or some good conversation He wanted everybody to be like he was happy” Sherry Robertson was only ol when he died driving all alone in his car after hunting near a little town called Houghton in South Dakota but his brother Calvin says “he enjoyed 70 years of life the way he lived” Nobody is sure yet what happened to Sherry last Friday that caused the car he was driving to go off the road and hit a tree They aren’t sure if he fell asleep at the wheel blacked out or what All the police can say for sure is he 1U was driving within the speed 1000 limit he had his seat belt on 500 'and there was no one argument followed by gunshots in one of the hotel rooms ABLE PEOPLE We’ve got to find some replacements” Bengtson said “We have ’able people here Of course there’s a limit to what you can stand” Moore’s injury is the second such to the Green Bay starting defensive unit this year Linebacker Dave Robinson underwent a similar operation two weeks ago and is lost for the season Offensive halfback Dave Hampton is also recuperating from surgery He had an abscess removed from his abdomen j Bengtson said there were I several alternatives to his defensive line problem— the most likely ones moving
