happened to about 100000 in 1963 and 1964 The CAB said there was no single cause for the problem but that it felt it had to do everything possible to cut down on the number of overbookings Under CAB procedures the air lines have until Feb 16 to submit their view If the board Tgvrjnc Jqc id 6 sees no merit in the arguments 1 it can make the proposed or-der final any time after the February as an astronaut in 1964 to try his hand in politics an ambition that was cut short when he fell in his bathroom and suffered an inner ear problem similar to Later that year Glenn retired from the Marine Corps and became a soft drink executive He has also been retained by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Headquarters in Washington as a part-time consultant paid $100 per day for any work he is asked to do- Carpenter Astronaut explorations have ranged from the vacuum of space to the depths of the ocean Carpenter 41 was fourth Mercury astronaut After his 1962 spaceflight however he was injured in a motorbike accident in Bermuda He has not regained flight status since In 1065 Carpenter took a leave of absence from the Space Center to work with the Navy on another type of exploration-under the ocean As officer in charge of Sealab 2 the Navy commander remained 205 feet below the surface for 30 days studying effects of undersea life on man Carpenter returned to the Space Center in early 1966 and became Branch Chief for Advanced Programs in the Astronaut Office In this job which he still holds Carpenter is looking into the future -of man's exploration in space Schirra As recently as two months ago the most likely choice as commander of the first moon landing crew seemed to be Walter (Wally) Schirra the fifth Mercury astronaut The 43-year-old Navy captain is a veteran of both the Mercury and Gemini programs He commanded Gemini 6 In 1965 and made space history by performing the first rendezvous in space of two maneuverable vehicles meeting Gemini 7 and flying within one foot of it Schirra was scheduled to head the crew of the second manrted Apollo flight an Earth-orbiting checkout mission similar to Then the flight was -cancelled by NASA in a time and money saving maneuver In the rescheduling of flights Schirra and his crew were named to back up the Grissom crew for the first manned Apollo mission They are preparing for this now The original backup crew for flight became the prime crew for the more important second manned Apollo and Schirra was left without a scheduled Apollo flight Thus though Schirra has the rendezvous experience Grissom lacks he likely will not have any Apollo experience before the moon mission He might however be assigned to the moon crew Schirra is an avid sailor and recently acquired a new sailboat "Count Cooper The youngest of the Mercury astronauts is Cooper the third member of the original seven with a slight chance to make the moon flight Cooper 39 was the final Mercury pilot He also commanded Gemini 5 becoming the first man to make two orbital flights and breaking the Russian lead in man hours in space with a total of 225 hours 15 Although not assigned to a specific Apollo crew Cooper
